Berkeley, Calif. January 21. THE No. 5 Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving
\nteams posted their second losses of the season today against California. The
\nwomen fell to No. 6 Cal 178-122, dropping their record to 7-2 (4-2 Pac-10). The
\nmen posted a 202-98 loss the No. 3 Golden Bears, dropping their record to 3-2
\n(2-2 Pac-10).<\/p>\n
The men tallied nine total second-place finishes beginning with the 200-medley
\nrelay team of sophomores Nick Thoman, Ivan Barnes, Albert Subirats and senior
\nSimon Burnett (1:28.30). Sophomore Matt Biel finished second in the 1000
\nfreestyle with a time of 9:09.91 and senior Tyler DeBerry finished third
\n(9:13.54). Burnett also took second in the 200 freestyle with a time of
\n1:37.07, while Thoman finished second in the 100 backstroke (48.32).<\/p>\n
In the 100 breaststroke, Barnes posted another second place finish for the
\nWildcats with a time of 54.35 and Thoman finished second as well in the 200
\nbackstroke (1:47.06). Barnes also finished third in the 200 breaststroke
\n(2:00.06).<\/p>\n
Senior Lyndon Ferns posted the only first place finishes on the swimming end,
\nfirst in the 100 freestyle with a time of 44.33, and also in the 100 butterfly
\n(48.06). DeBerry placed third in the 500 freestyle (4:29.64) with Biel
\nfinishing not far behind in fourth place with a time of 4:29.66.<\/p>\n
Senior Dave Rollins finished second in the 200 IM (1:48.50) and ending today?s
\nevents was the 200 free relay team of Ferns, Subirats, freshman Nicolas Nilo and
\nBarnes who finished second (1:21.34).<\/p>\n
In the diving well, senior John Collier finished first in the 3-meter
\ncompetition with 397.20 points while placing second in the 1-meter with 332.10
\npoints.<\/p>\n
For the women?s team, the 200-medley relay team of seniors Marshi Smith, Erin
\nSieper, junior Whitney Myers and senior Jenna Gresdal finished second in a time
\nof 1:42.58. Sophomore Lacey Nymeyer also finished second in the 200 freestyle
\nwith a time of 1:48.79.<\/p>\n
Gresdal posted the first individual win for the Wildcats in the 100 backstroke
\nwith a time of 54.89 while freshman Jessica Embick finished third in the 100
\nbreaststroke (1:03.51).<\/p>\n
Myers finished first in the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:00.24. In the 50
\nfreestyle Nymeyer and sophomore Courtney Cashion finished second (23.15) and
\nthird (23.63) while Gresdal finished third in the 200 backstroke (2: 01.47).<\/p>\n
Embick took second place in the 200 breaststroke (2:17.33) as sophomore
\nJacquelyn Craft finished third (2:17.45). Nymeyer posted another second place
\nfinish in the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:55.39.<\/p>\n
In the 100 butterfly, Myers finished first (55.36) ahead of senior Lisa Pursley
\n(55.85) as Myers also took first place in the 200 IM with a time of 2:01.89.<\/p>\n
Finishing the events for the women was the 200 free relay composed of Nymeyer,
\nCashion, freshman Lindsey Kelly and freshman Ann Turner who finished second
\nwith an ?A? NCAA qualifying time of 1:32.69.<\/p>\n
Senior Tiffany Manning swept the diving events, winning both the 1-meter (319.50
\npoints) and 3-meter (352.12) competitions. Sophomore Holly Kast finished second
\nin both events posting 246.14 points in the 1-meter and 261.82 pints in the
\n3-meter.<\/p>\n
The swimming and diving team will resume competition on January 27-28 when they
\nplay host to the University of Texas. Competition will begin at 2 p.m. (MST)
