Tempe, AZ – Arcadia High School swept both the girls and boys team titles at the Arizona State 4A High School Swimming Championships at the Mona Plummer Aquatic Center at Arizona State University. <\/p>\n
In the girls team battle, Arcadia pulled out the victory on the final event. Entering the 400 yd free relay a scant 1.5 points ahead of Catalina Foothills, coach Erica Jones’ Titans placed second in 3:31.57, with Catalina Foothills third. That gave the Titans a 3.5 point victory. <\/p>\n
Freshman Kalyn Keller, a Pan American Games silver medalist, was the standout for Arcadia, setting records in both her wins. In a much-anticipated duel with undefeated Emily Mason of Chaparral, Keller took the 500 free in 4:49.60, breaking the state record set by April Diez some 15 years ago. Mason, who earlier in the year had also been under 4:50, faded to 4:52.78. Keller also won the 200 IM in a 4A record of 2:03.86. Kera Draker was Arcadia’s other individual winner, copping the 100 breast in 1:05.73. <\/p>\n
Mason, a junior, earlier won her fifth consecutive individual title in her high school career, taking the 100 fly in a 4A record, 56.37. She also swam on Chaparral’s victorious 200 medley relay (1:49.14) and 400 free relay (3:31.29). <\/p>\n
Mason’s teammate, Michelle Molina, won two individual events and anchored the 200 medley and 400 free relays. Molina took the 100 (51.45) and 200 freestyle (1:51.78). <\/p>\n
The Titan boys rolled to the team title by 75 points, amassing 277 to 202 for Thunderbird and 191 for Chaparral. <\/p>\n
Nick Eggen was the big gun for the Titans, winning the 100 back in 52.46 and the 200 IM in 1:55.56. He also swam on Arcadia’s victorious 400 free relay (3:14.17). <\/p>\n
Thunderbird had two swimmers who won two individual titles. Jason Revere took the 100 fly by a touch over Chaparral’s Dan Ditoro, 50.58 to 50.65, then came back to win the 100 breast in 1:00.29.
