DENVER, Colorado. January 14. THE University of Denver swimming and diving teams defeated South Dakota State in dual meet competition this afternoon at El Pomar Natatorium. The women defeated the Jackrabbits 138-72, while the men posted a 131-89 victory. The victory pushes the women\u2019s dual meet record to 8-1 on the season, while the men improve to 8-3 on the season.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was some good racing here tonight,\u201d head coach Jim Henry said. \u201cIt was good for the team to get back in the pool and race as we prepare for the upcoming conference championships.\u201d<\/p>\n
The women\u2019s relays got things started. In the women\u2019s 200-medley relay the team of Michele Lowry (Hailey, Idaho), Tessa O\u2019Connell (Denver, Colo.), Lauren Miranda (Louisville, Colo.) and Kelsey Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.) swam an even race against teammates Karen Iverson (Littleton, Colo.), Ivy Yi (Honolulu, Hawaii), Caitlin Summers (Tigard, Ore.) and Lauren Bortnowski (Houston, Texas) for the 1-2 finish. Harmony Zeller (Arvada, Colo.) continued her dominance in the distance events wining the 1000-free with a time of 10:38.63, outdistancing teammate Meghan McNally (Lonetree, Colo.) who finished in second place with a time of 11:00.50. Miranda took top honors in the 200-free with a time of 1:57.63, while Erika Ross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) took home first place in the 50-free with a time of 25.31. In the 200-IM Summers showcased her skills, taking first-place honors with a time of 2:09.86, nearly four seconds faster than her nearest competitor. Totura scored points for DU in the 100-fly taking top honors with a time of 58.94. Iverson also added to the point tally with a victory in the 100-free.<\/p>\n
The men\u2019s team was equally impressive tallying first-place finishes in each event that they were entered in. Freshman Chris Hopeck (Houston, Texas) took top honors in the 1000-free with a time of 9:49.97, while Brian Flaherty (Granite Bay, Calif.) took home the title in the 200-free with a time of 1:45.22. Marcus Christianson (Hutchinson, Minn.) won the 50-free with a time of 22.27, while Blake Worsley (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) took second place with a time of 22.46. Daniel Vollmer (Ajax, Ontario) earned a first-place nod in the 200-IM while Michael Peterson (Ames, Iowa) and Daniel Monsivais (El Paso, Texas) added to the Pioneer tally with first-place finishes in the 100-fly and 100-free.<\/p>\n
Diver Aaron Feight (Littleton, Colo.) had another excellent performance on the boards this afternoon. He tallied a sweep of the 1-meter and 3-meter boards with scores of 356.77 and 402.67, both new school records and pool records. Hannah Duckett (Magnolia, Texas) recorded her first sweep of the season by taking first place on the 1-meter with a score of 219.07 and the 3-meter with a score of 235.42. Jordan Lance (Marion, Ind.) and Kevin Haberman (Long Grove, Ill.) finished in second place on both boards.<\/p>\n
