TUSCALOOSA, Ala. January, 8. BEHIND winning swims from freshmen Katherine Noland, Sarah Bedell and Berit Aljand, the LSU women's swimming team was able to pull out a 60-53 victory over Alabama on Saturday at the Alabama Aquatic Center. <\/p>\n
The Lady Tigers recorded a split on the day after falling to Kentucky, 68-44. On the men's side, the 18th-ranked Wildcats defeated LSU, 66-46, while the 22nd-ranked Crimson Tide men's squad dealt the Tigers a 71-42 loss. <\/p>\n
Noland, a native of Deerfield Beach, Fla., swam a season fast time of 1:51.77 in the 200 freestyle to earn top honors. She also placed fourth in the 200 butterfly (2:07.94), before joining Katie Gilmore, Sabrina Messmer and Heather Brand to capture the final relay of the meet, the 400 free. <\/p>\n
The group touched the wall at 3:26.92, while LSU's "B" team gathered third-place honors with a time of 3:40.69. The Lady Tigers also took third in the women's 400 medley relay to start the meet (3:53.45). <\/p>\n
Aljand picked up her individual victory in the 200 backstroke with a clocking of 2:05.85. The event was a critical one in a points finish that featured Mallory Neltner taking third with a time of 2:07.88. <\/p>\n
Bedell, a product of Episcopal High School in Baton Rouge, finished first in the 200 breaststroke with a mark of 2:23.83. <\/p>\n
The Lady Tigers earned second and third-place finishes in the 50 free sprint behind quality swims from Colleen Bertirotti and Katie Gilmore. Bertirotti nearly managed a winning swim with a time of 23.74, while Gilmore went 23.81 in her dash. <\/p>\n
Bertirotti also placed third in the 100 free with a time of 52.15. <\/p>\n
On the men's side, Kevin Braud bested UK's Shane Eliason with a 200 back first-place swim of 1:50.20.<\/p>\n
Julius Gloeckner continued his impressive freshman campaign with second-place times in the 200 individual medley (1:51.67) and the 200 butterfly (1:51.64). His time in the 200 IM was a season-high. <\/p>\n
Miko Malberg narrowly missed an NCAA "B" cut time in the 50 free, touching the wall third at 20.73. <\/p>\n
While the divers were away competing at the Georgia Invitational, their points had a significant impact on the meet. LSU's men's 3-meter team of Niko Dalman, Nathan Schreiber and Andrew Keane went 1-2-3 to sweep the event. Hali Saucier, Alyson Thomas and Paige Brown were fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively in the women's 1-meter. <\/p>\n
