FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, January 8. EDDIE Reese, who has sculpted the career of numerous Olympians and several world-record holders, has been named the recipient of the 2005 Terao Award, presented to the top coach of the quadrennium covering 2001-2004. En route to the honor, Reese edged out Bob Bowman and Denis Cotterell.<\/p>\n
The longtime coach at the University of Texas, Reese earned the honor largely for his development of Aaron Peirsol, Brendan Hansen and Ian Crocker. The three men combined for eight medals at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and Peirsol (100\/200 back) and Hansen (100\/200 breast) are world-record holders in a pair of events. Crocker is the world-record holder in the 100 butterfly. The three men, along with Jason Lezak, hold the global standard in the 400 medley relay. Reese headed the U.S. men\u2019s Olympic Team in Athens.<\/p>\n
The other nominees also sported gaudy resumes. Bowman, of course, is the man who has guided the career of Phelps, who won eight medals at the Athens Olympics, including six gold. As for Cotterell, he has overseen the career of Grant Hackett, the world-record holder in the 800 and 1,500 freestyles.
