BLOOMINGTON, Indiana. January 7. THE No. 11 Indiana men's swimming and diving squad dominated No. 21 Ohio State in a 134-108 triumph over the Buckeyes at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., on Jan. 7. Overall, the Hoosiers won 11 titles against OSU's two. Senior Sergiy Fesenko, sophomore Todd Patrick and junior Colin Russell paced the Hoosiers with three titles each. With the win, IU moved to 5-2 on the season and 3-1 in conference action. <\/p>\n
Prior to exhibitioning performances for sportsmanship reasons, the Hoosiers finished the meet with a 161-82 lead. <\/p>\n
In the initial event of the meet, the Hoosiers jumped out to an 11-6 advantage by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The Indiana contingent of sophomore Ben Hesen, senior Kevin Swander, senior Thomas Clavier and Patrick touched first in 1:29.65. Meanwhile, Ohio State's team of R.J. Lemyre, Felipe Travesso, Joe Doyle and Matt Voelker placed second in 1:30.41. <\/p>\n
In the 1,000-yard freestyle, Fesenko turned on the jets in the final 50 yards to catch Ohio State's Rob Tiernan (9:24.75) with a 9:24.35 to claim the title. IU sophomore Alex Brunfeldt rounded out the top three with a 9:28.87. At the end of the event, Indiana held a 25-11 lead. Also of note, freshman Steffan Troxel registered a personal-best time of 9:30.26 for fourth place. <\/p>\n
In the 200-yard freestyle, Russell raced to first with a 1:38.40, while OSU picked up second and third with Matthias Sigrist finished second in 1:41.00 and Marty Tomes taking third in 1:41.10. The Hoosiers jumped out to a 36-19 lead after the event. Notably, freshman Jeff Wood posted a personal-best time of 1:42.94 for sixth place. <\/p>\n
In the 50-yard freestyle, the Buckeyes closed the gap to 42-32 as Doyle touched in 20.99. Meanwhile, junior Lee Houchin placed second in 21.18, while OSU's Gary Grant finished third in 21.24. <\/p>\n
In the 200-yard IM, the Hoosiers countered with a Patrick win in 1:49.96, while freshman A.J. Miller helped IU to a one-three effort by taking third in 1:53.05.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, OSU's Nate King took second in 1:51.13. Heading into the break,
\nIndiana held a 56-37 advantage in the meet. Also of note, freshman Jimmy Schwartz registered a career-low time of 2:02.92 in a non-scoring performance. <\/p>\n
In the 200-yard butterfly, Fesenko (1:49.60) showed off his famous last 50-yard surge by coming from behind to track down OSU's Marty Tomes (1:50.74) for first. Remarkably, sophomore Nick Walkotten (1:50.73) also jumped ahead of Tomes to earn IU a one-two sweep in the event. With the top-two sweep, the Hoosiers pulled ahead 69-43 in the meet. Notably, freshmen Keith Dawley (1:57.47) and Matt O'Neal (2:05.40) recorded personal-best times in non-scoring efforts. <\/p>\n
In the 100-yard freestyle, Indiana pushed out to an 83-48 lead on the back of its second consecutive top-two sweep. Russell raced to first in 44.69, while Houchin picked up second in 46.05. OSU's Voelker closed out the top-three with a 46.09. Also of note, IU's Clavier touched in a career-best time of 47.32 for fifth place. <\/p>\n
In the 200-yard backstroke, OSU broke back into the win column as Lemyre touched first in 1:47.31. Additionally, Ohio State's King placed second in 1:48.21, while Hesen finished third for the Hoosiers in 1:48.90. At the end of the event, IU owned an 89-61 lead. Notably, Wood recorded a personal-best time of 1:55.29 for fifth place. <\/p>\n
In the 500-yard freestyle, Indiana responded with a top-two sweep of its own as Fesenko claimed his third crown of the day with a 4:33.01. Moreover, sophomore John Kevin Koehler placed second in 4:33.20. OSU's Tiernan rounded out the top three with a 4:39.16. With the completion of the middle-distance swim, the Hoosiers led, 104-65. <\/p>\n
In the one-meter diving break, the Hoosiers dropped the hammer with a top-four sweep as sophomore Taylor Roberts finished first with a 307.20 tally. Additionally, senior Ryan Fagan placed second with a 301.28 and senior Jesse Rappaport claimed third with a 292.28. Furthermore, sophomore transfer Justin Montrie made his debut with a fourth-place 275.18. <\/p>\n
In the three-meter competition, Fagan snared first place with a personal-best tally of 368.18, while Rappaport took second with a 315.38. OSU's Wes Wieser rounded out the top three with a 308.55. With diving points added in, the Hoosiers vaulted out to a 134-73 lead. Remarkably, Fagan's effort now stands as the eighth-best tally in school history in a three-meter dual-meet format. <\/p>\n
In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Hoosiers dominated with a top-four effort as Swander raced to first with a 2:02.04, while senior Hank Baldwin finished second in 2:05.05. Additionally, Miller claimed third in 2:07.27, while freshman Heath Tameris recorded a personal-best time of 2:07.63 for fourth. Heading into the final relay, the Hoosiers led, 150-76. <\/p>\n
In the final event of the afternoon, Indiana captured the victory with a win in the 200-yard freestyle relay.
