A WORLD record, a World Cup record and an American record performance eclipsing the oldest American record on the books highlighted the first day of swimming at the FINA World Cup meet at the Nassau County Aquatic Center on Long Island. Tonight.

South Africa’s sizzling Ryk Neething, who trains at the University of Arizona, barely had let the ink dry on his pending world record from the Moscow World Cup event two weeks in the 100m Individual Medley when he smashed that record with a brilliant 51.52-second performance, for history’s first sub-52 second performance. Fellow South African and former Arizona Wildcat Roland Schoeman was second in 52.23, under the previous World Cup and US Open records. Thirty-eight yeara-old Ron Karnaugh was seveenth in 56.86.

Josefin Lillhage of Sweden broke the US Open and World Cup record in the 200m freestyle by defeating France’s Olympic finalist, Solenne Figues in 1:54.64. Figues’ 1:55.14 effort was also under Martina Moracova’s US Open record of 1:55.41. Lillhage went out in a swift 26.95 at the first 50 and kept Figues just behind her the remainder of the race despite being out-split on the 2nd and 4th 50’s, but Figues could never quite catch up.

Sixteen year-old Kate Ziegler, who won two national freestyle titles at the 2004 USA Swimming Summer Nationals last August at Stanford, broke the oldest American record on the books when she lowered Sippy Woodhead’s mark in the 800m freestyle. Woodhead had set the record at 8:18.77 almost 25 years ago to the day.

Ziegler went out in a solid 4:06.80 at the halfway point, over three seconds ahead of SMU’s Flavia Rigamonti, representing Switzerland, and was never threatened. She came home in 4:10.02 to set the new mark in 8:16.32, also the fastest time in the world this year. Ziegler, addressing the crowd in attendance during her post-race television interview, displayed her youthful exuberance. When questioned by the television reporter as to how it felt setting an American record, she exclaimed, “I don’t know, I’ve never done it before.”

Other winners included:

· Schoeman in the 100 free (46.27) and 50 butterfly in 23.18.
Schoeman just missed breaking the world record in the 100 free, a
mark he shares with Ian Crocker at 46.25.
