IRVINE, California, August 8. AFTER a day of relay swimming, the FINA Masters World Championships returned to the individual events in Montreal. Five world records fell on Friday, including a history-making swim in the women’s 200 butterfly.<\/p>\n

In a race that was bound to gather much applause from the crowd in attendance, Nora Ronai of Master Icara Geraldo swim team in Brazil swam an 8:52.22 in the 200 butterfly to set a world record in the 90-94 age group. The 90-year-old became the oldest swimmer in Masters history to complete the event, and thereby set the first world record in the 200 fly in the age group.<\/p>\n

Ronai\u2019s splits per 50 meters:
\n1:55.04, 2:24.13, 2:31.25, 2:01.80<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Allen Stark has been chasing Bob Strand in the pool for many years, and Stark finally got to the top of the mountain by taking Strand\u2019s world record of 2:58.13 in the 65-69 age group with a 2:56.96. After sitting out a couple of years to recover from injury, Stark entered a new age group and celebrated with a world record while representing Oregon Masters.<\/p>\n

Stark\u2019s splits:
\n38.66, 45.04, 45.53, 47.73<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

In the women\u2019s 200 breast, Lo Knapp of Swim Utah swam a 3:09.89, beating Bonnie Pronk\u2019s world record of 3:14.49 in the 60-64 age group.<\/p>\n

Pronk\u2019s splits:

Two days after setting a world record in the 50 butterfly, Phoenix Swim Club\u2019s Noriko Inada swam a 1:02.69 in the 100 backstroke, beating her own 35-39 mark of 1:03.04. Ellen Reynolds of Sawtooth Masters also picked up a second world record this week, posting a 1:09.28 in the 50-54 age group to beat her own record of 1:09.64.<\/p>\n

We neglected to mention<\/b> in our roundup of the world records set during Wednesday’s relay competition that Brian Jacobson swam a 23.43 leading off Minnesota Masters’ 200 free relay. That time broke his own world record of 23.60 in the 40-44 age group.
