ATLANTA, Georgia, December 13. JUST because she\u2019s taking the year away from the collegiate scene doesn\u2019t mean Amanda Weir is removed from fast swimming. Take the weekend for example. Competing at the Georgia Senior State Championships at Georgia Tech University, Weir corralled a quartet of victories and made history in the 50-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n
A two-time medalist in relay action from the 2004 Olympic Games, Weir (SwimAtlanta) blazed 21.99 in the 50 free to become just the 10th female to dip below the 22-second barrier. Weir is now tied with Jenny Thompson and Colleen Lanne. Maritza Correia, a former standout at the University of Georgia, holds the fastest time in history with a swim of 21.69.<\/p>\n
In addition to her sizzling effort in the 50 freestyle, Weir checked in with a 48.37 mark in the 100 free and a 1:46.44 effort in the 200 free. The 19-year-old also won the 100 backstroke with a swim of 54.97. After competing for Georgia as a freshman, Weir decided to transfer from the school. She is taking this year off from the collegiate ranks and will join the University of Southern California next year.<\/p>\n
At last year\u2019s NCAA Championships, Weir took second place in the 200 freestyle, third in the 50 free and placed ninth in the 100 free by winning the consolation final. She also played a major role in relay action, helping Georgia to American records in the 200 free and 800 free relays. Georgia won the NCAA team crown over Auburn.
