KNOCKING on Janet Evans\u2019 door for a little more than a year now, Kate Ziegler has officially been accepted into the company of the distance legend. How? Well, take a look at what Ziegler accomplished Sunday night at the Tom Dolan Invitational at George Mason University.<\/p>\n<p>Producing a time of 9:24.80, Ziegler set an American record in the 1,000-yard freestyle as she toppled the 1989 standard of Evans. The former record, set in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was 9:25.49. Ziegler split 1:49.93 at the 200 and went through the 500-yard mark in a ridiculous 4:40.76. For her final 100, the 17-year-old split 54.94.<\/p>\n<p>Over the summer, Ziegler (The Fish) firmly established herself as the heir to Evans\u2019 distance legacy. While at the World Championships in Montreal, Ziegler claimed gold in the 800 and 1,500-meter freestyles. Earlier in the Dolan Invitational, Ziegler earned victories in the 200, 500 and 1,650 free events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FAIRFAX, Virginia, December 11.
