TRIESTE, Italy, December 9. THE world-record book continued to be assaulted on Friday as Laszlo Cseh and Laure Manaudou produced global standards during the second day of the European Short Course Championships in Italy. Cseh claimed his world record in the 400 individual medley while Manaudou made her mark in the 800 freestyle.<\/p>\n

One day after lowering the world record in the 200 individual medley, Cseh posted history\u2019s fastest time in the 400 I.M. and almost became the first man to crack the four-minute barrier. A triple-event medalist at the World Championships in Montreal, Cseh was timed in 4:00.37, well under the former record of 4:02.72, set in 2003 by Canada\u2019s Brian Johns. Italy\u2019s Luca Marin was second in 4:02.88.<\/p>\n

Coming off a handful of solid swims in recent weeks, Manaudou covered the 800 free in an eye-popping 8:11.25, a time that hacked more than two seconds off the 8:13.35 of Japan\u2019s Sachiko Yamada from 2002. Manaudou split 4:05.51 at the 400-meter mark and easily defeated Russia\u2019s Anastasia Ivanenko, who finish in 8:14.51.
