STANFORD, CA – Five Cardinal swimmers won two individual events each and No. 3 Stanford dominated the relays en route to a 173-127 win over 13th-ranked Texas. The Cardinal improves to 1-0 on the young season, and extends its dual-meet win streak at deGuerre Pool to 40 straight, dating to the 1987-88 season, while the Lady Longhorns fall to 0-1. <\/p>\n
Jessica Foschi, Catherine Fox, Misty Hyman, Shelly Ripple and Gabrielle Rose won two events each to lead the way for the Cardinal. Junior Kim Powers won the three-meter diving, and the Cardinal 200 medley and 400 free relay squads also won. <\/p>\n
For Texas, sophomore Stephanie Jenkins won the 200 breast (2:20.38), junior Colleen Lanne won the 200 free (1:49.43) and freshman Kristen Marquis won the one-meter diving (256.90). <\/p>\n
Foschi had a very strong performance in the first meet of her sophomore season. She won the 1650 free (16:42.41) in an NCAA provisional qualifying time, came back to win the 500 free (4:54.12), also in a provisional qualifying time, and then placed second to Ripple in the 400 IM. Fox, the three-time defending NCAA champion in the 50 free and the American record-holder in the 100 back, won her two specialties easily. She took the 50 in 23.65 and won the 100 back in 55.03, and swam on both winning relays. <\/p>\n
Hyman, a junior, posted an automatic NCAA qualifying time in the 200 fly (1:58.28) and a provisional time in the 100 fly (55.16), and also took third in the 200 back. Ripple, a sophomore, won the 200 back (2:01.21) and the 400 IM (4:23.41), both in provisional times, and placed second to Hyman in the 200 fly (1:58.93) in an automatic qualifying mark. Rose, a senior, showed her versatility by winning the 100 breast (1:04.79) and the 100 free (54.12), swimming the breast on the medley relay and also swimming on the free relay.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
