RUNNING from Thursday through Sunday, the European Short Course Championships will take place in Trieste, Italy. The competition is one of the year\u2019s final major events and will feature an impressive field that includes several athletes crowned as world champions last summer in Montreal.<\/p>\n<p>Fresh off a European record in the 400-meter freestyle, France\u2019s Laure Manaudou is expected to challenge the world record in the event. Manaudou won gold in the 400 free in Montreal and was a triple-event medalist at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. Meanwhile, Italy\u2019s Filippo Magnini will look for sprint-freestyle success. He won a world title in the 100 free last summer, edging South Africa\u2019s Roland Schoeman at the wall.<\/p>\n<p>Other world champions scheduled to compete are Germany\u2019s Mark Warnecke (50 breaststroke), Poland\u2019s Pawel Korzeniowski (200 butterfly) and Hungary\u2019s Laszlo Cseh (400 individual medley). Cseh was recently named European Swimmer of the Year by <i>Swimming World Magazine<\/i>.
