BRITISH COLUMBIA, Canada, November 28. BRITTANY Reimer of Victoria and Brent Hayden of Vancouver, two of Canada\u2019s big stars at this past summer\u2019s World Championships, registered their third victories on Sunday at the Commonwealth Games Canadian swimming team trials.<\/p>\n
A total of 31 swimmers were named to the team for the Games, set for March 15- 26 in Melbourne.<\/p>\n
Reimer, who assured her spot on Saturday, cruised to the win in the women\u2019s 800 freestyle, clocking 8:39.17. She also won the 200 and 400 freestyles this week. Tanya Hunks of New Westminster, B.C., was second in 8:51.01 and Sarah Mayzes of Victoria was third in 8:58.01.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was pleased with the time, I achieved my goal,\u201d said Reimer, 17, who solidified herself among the best middle distance and long distance freestyle swimmers at the World Champs in Montreal with silver in the 800 free, bronze in the 1,500 and fourth place in the 400 \u2013 all three swims in Canadian record time.<\/p>\n
In the men\u2019s 200 individual medley, Brian Johns of Vancouver, who missed most of the year with a serious shoulder injury, took the gold in 2:02.03, about a second off his personal best time. Jonathan Aubry of Montreal was second in 2:04.49 and Keith Beavers of Waterloo, Ont., third in 2:05.08.<\/p>\n
Other winners in men\u2019s competition were Hayden in the 50 freestyle to go with his victories in the 100 and 200 freestyles this week, Scott Dickens of Vancouver in the 50 breaststroke and Ryan Cochrane of Victoria in the 1,500 freestyle. Other winners in women\u2019s competition were Lauren Van Oosten of Calgary in the 50 breaststroke, Erica Morningstar of Calgary in the 50 freestyle and Liz Warden of Toronto in the 200 IM.<\/p>\n
The Commonwealth Games team nominees are for the men are: Cochrane, Dickens, Hayden, Hurd, Johns, Mathieu Bois of Montreal, Mike Brown of Calgary, Thomas Kindler of Montreal, Yannick Lupien of Quebec City, Matt Rose of Peterborough, Ont., Darryl Rudolf of Vancouver, Colin Russell of Toronto, Rick Say of Victoria and Desmond Strelzow of Victoria.<\/p>\n
