THE USA’s Jason Lezak out-sprinted South Africa’s Ryk Neethling for the second straight day, taking the 50 free on Day 2 of the World Cup 3 meet in Daejon, Korea, in 21.62 seconds. Neethling followed four-hundredths behind.

Neethling fought off a determined challenge by Argentina’s Jose Meolans to win the 200 free, 1:45.40 to 1:46.16. It was Neethling’s 12th victory in the first three meets on this season’s tour.

Two other Americans posted victories tonight. Former Stanford star, Randall Bal, took the 50 (24.33) and 200 back (1:53.52) to complete his sweep of the dorsal events. Brazil’s Lucas Salatta was second in the longer race at 1:54.72.

Tanica Jamison scored with a victory in the 100 IM. The ex-Texas standout clocked 1:02.33, almost half a second ahead of Sweden’s – and UCLA’s – Malin Svahnstrom.

Holland’s Marleen Veldhuis was the only four-time winner in Daejon, as she breezed tonight in the 100 free in 53.24, almost three seconds in front of her closest challenger, then won a tough 50 fly in 26.72. Yesterday she took the 50 and 200 free.

One other swimmer, besides Bal, completed the hat trick tonight. Brazil’s Kai Almeida, 21, flew through the 100 fly in 51.05 to secure an easy win over Russia’s Nikolai Skvortsov, ensuring his second-straight butterfly triple. Almeida’s teammate, Lucas Salatta, added the 200 IM to his 400 IM triumph yesterday. In the shorter race, he topped Sho Uchida of Japan by .03 in 1:58.94.

Korea’s Min Ji Shim, winner of the women’s 50 back yesterday, took the 100 tonight in 1:02.08.
