DR. Rich Morris, President of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) announced today that the organization is conducting a Search for a new Executive Director and will accept applications for the position beginning immediately.

Toward this end, the CSCAA’s Executive Committee has formed an Ad Hoc Committee, chaired by Bob Groseth, head men’s coach at Northwestern University, to assist in the search.

Bob Boettner has served as Executive Director of the CSCAA since 1993, during which time the organization’s membership has nearly tripled, from 349 to more than 900.

“Bob has done a superb job, and is largely responsible for the growth of our organization. Now, however, we want to investigate new directions in leadership. This does not necessarily mean that we have to choose a new Executive Director. It is our hope that Bob will apply.”

With Olympic sports, particularly men’s Olympic sports, under severe pressure at the collegiate level, the new Executive Director will be in a key position to impact the future of college swimming, not to mention the overall future of American swimming.

Dr. Morris, head men’s and women’s coach at Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida, described the ideal candidate as:
• Knowledgeable about the current state of college swimming;
• Passionate about college swimming and its role in the American system of higher education;
• A self-starter capable of doing it all in a one-person office;
• A dynamic presenter; and
• Able to get things done without a lot of help.

Check Wielgus, Executive Director of USA Swimming, explained the importance of the position: "What sets American swimming apart from the rest of the world is our country's intercollegiate program. Collegiate swimming provides a national infrastructure of major aquatic facilities, an employment base for professional coaches, scholarships and competitive opportunities for thousands of athletes.

"The CSCAA plays an important and essential role in ensuring that
collegiate swimming remains healthy,” he added.

John Leonard, Executive Director of the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA), agreed: “This is one of the most important positions currently to be filled in American swimming. The reason, of course, is the seemingly never-ending threat to student-athletes who happen to be swimmers.

“It is my hope that the CSCAA will emerge under new leadership as a powerful force for allowing college coaches to continue to get the job done, as they have for the last 80 years.”

USC Coach Mark Schubert, a member of the Ad Hoc Committee, added: “This is one of the most important moments in the history of our sport, one that will determine the future direction of collegiate swimming. I am very excited about the possibility of new leadership.

Bob Groseth, Chairman of the Ad Hoc Committee and head men’s coach at Northwestern University, commented: “I look at this as a tremendous opportunity for the CSCAA to take the next step in the growth and development of the organization. The person who fills this position will have a major impact on the future of college swimming.

“The CSCAA should be a significant partner with the other major swimming organizations and the NCAA.

“Everyone on the Committee understands the importance of this selection and we look forward to hearing from a lot of very qualified candidates from a variety of backgrounds.”

The Ad Hoc Committee consists of three representatives from the NCAA Division I and one each from Divisions II and III: Teri McKeever (University of California); Mark Schubert (University of Southern California); Bob Steele (formerly, California State University, Bakersfield) Jim Steen (Kenyon College); and Groseth.

Dr. Morris said the deadline for accepting applications will be January 31, 2006. From the pool of applicants, the Board and the Ad Hoc Committee will select 10 semifinalists, whom the Board of Directors will interview.
Three finalists will then be chosen. They will be interviewed, in person, by the CSCAA Executive Committee..

“We expect to announce our selection by mid-March and for that person to be on board by May,” Dr. Morris concluded.

Applications should be sent to:
Dr. Rich Morris
Head Swim Coach
Rollins College
1000 Holt Ave 2730
Winter Park, FL 32789
e-mail: rmorris@rollins.edu

Electronic applications are encouraged.

About the CSCAA:
Formed in 1922, the CSCAA is the oldest collegiate coaches association in America. In that year it played a critical role in writing the first NCAA swimming rulebook. Over the years it has evolved from a small group that met to train each winter in Ft. Lauderdale, at a site that eventually came to be the International Swimming Hall of Fame, to become the leading representative of college swimming coaches.

Under Bob Boettner’s leadership, the organization has grown rapidly, expanding its services to provide:
• Poolside an informative, 28-page quarterly magazine;
• All-America certificates for all three NCAA divisions as well as the NAIA and NJCAA;
• Academic All-America awards for both teams and individuals;
• A bi-monthly national ranking of the top 25 dual meet teams in the USA;
• Representation on NCAA committees;
• A national convention each May, at which is featured the annual Speedo Awards Dinner; and
• A CSCAA Forum in Florida during the December holidays

Boettner also signed 13 companies as sponsor of the CSCAA.
