ATHENS, Georgia, November 20. THE Georgia swimming and diving teams had 10 swimmers post wins in their season debut in races, helping the No. 1 Lady Bulldogs and No. 11 Bulldogs sweep Emory at Gabrielsen Natatorium Friday. The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-0 with a 179-120 win and the Bulldogs went to 3-2 with a 156-113 victory.<\/p>\n
"I thought it was a terrific meet," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "I was pleasantly surprised with our kids. There wasn't one single event I thought we could have done better in. We were able to move some kids around a little bit. It's always nice to swim something else and it's nice to see if we can find somebody else's third event."<\/p>\n
In the 200 medley relay, Georgia's team of Gil Stovall, Joe Redmon, Nathan Bibliowicz and Nathan Stibrich took first place with a time of 1:33.66.<\/p>\n
In the men's 1,000 free, Will Thorburn won in his season debut with a time of 9:39.23. Likewise, in the men's 200 free, Sebastien Rouault finished in first place with a time of 1:40.51. Peter Verhoef also won in his season debut in the 100 back with a time of 52.86.<\/p>\n
Genya Gouzeev swept the 1- and 3-meter diving events, scoring 342.97 and 332.10 points. In the 100 breaststroke, Nathan Bibliowicz finished first with a time of 58.94. Joe Redmon placed first in the 200 fly with a time of 1:51.54. In the 50 free, Michael Cellini has a winning time of 20.95. Cellini's time also topped the Bulldogs' 50 free marks in 2005.<\/p>\n
In the 100 free, Georgia's Andrew Taylor had a first-place finish with a time of 46.34 and Rouault grabbed first-place honors in the 200 back after clocking a time of 1:52.90. In the 200 breast, Georgia's Angus Jno Baptiste won with a time of 2:10.68.<\/p>\n
For the women, Lauren Groblewski, Melissa Klein, Rachel Myco and Christie Hupman opened the day for the Lady Bulldogs as they won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:48.43.<\/p>\n
In the 1,000 freestyle, Mary DeScenza notched first-place honors in her first race in this event this year with a time of 9:50.06, which was a team-best time for 2005. In the 200 free, Jessica Cole won and had an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:50.03. It was Cole's first time racing in this event.<\/p>\n
In the 100 backstroke, Aleksandra Putra grabbed first place with a 57.03 mark. In the 1- and 3-meter dives, Natalie Thomas and Emily Hunter swept the top spots for Georgia with scores of 252.37 and 337.20. In the 100 breast, Sarah Poewe finished first with a time of 1:03.45. In the 200 butterfly, Laura Conway won with a time of 2:06.66.<\/p>\n
In the 50 free, Karen Guilkey finished in first place with a time of 24.44 in her first race in that event. Austen Carter won the 100 free after posting a time of 52.67. In the 200 back, Groblewski finished in first place with a time of 2:04.73. In the 200 breast, Melissa Klein notched a time of 2:22.09, which gave her a first-place finish.<\/p>\n
In the 500 free, Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce raced for the first time this year and finished in 4:50.44. While Joyce's mark was a B cut time, she was designated as an exhibition swimmer and did not place and count as a scorer.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
