Tucson, Arizona. November 18. THE No. 5 Arizona men's and the No.6 women's swimming and diving teams defeated Southern California Friday in the first Pac-10 competition of the season. The men defeated the No.10 Trojans 138-103 while the women defeated the eighth-ranked women of Troy 128-113.<\/p>\n
"This was certainly a very good meet," said head swimming coach Frank Busch. "We swam one of the best dual-meets I have seen in a long time. We had times today that were very good for this time of year and that's all due to the effort of the team."<\/p>\n
On the men's side, Arizona won a total of eight events beginning with the 400 medley relay composed of senior Simon Burnett, sophomore Ivan Barnes, sophomore Albert Subirats and junior Adam Ritter. The relay won with a time of 3:13.46, which is currently the fastest collegiate time swum in the nation.<\/p>\n
In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Matt Biel finished second (9:18.77), senior Tyler DeBerry finished third (9:29.30) and freshman David Pursley placed fourth. Burnett won the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:37.73, which qualifies as the fourth fastest time in the nation. Senior Lyndon Ferns won the 50 freestyle in a time of 19.89, which is currently the second fastest time in the nation.<\/p>\n
Senior Dave Rollins finished second in the 200 IM (1:49.80) while Ritter placed third. In the 100 freestyle, Ferns took the top position with a time of 43.83, posting the No. 1 time in the nation and Ritter finished second (44.66).<\/p>\n
Burnett also won the 200 backstroke (1:45.51) while Barnes won the 200 breaststroke (2:00.99). Biel finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:31.44), while DeBerry and Pursley came in third and fourth.<\/p>\n
The 400 free relay team of Ferns, freshman Matt Barnard, Persson and sophomore Albert Subirats ended the meet by winning the race with a time of 3:00.36.<\/p>\n
On the diving boards for the men, senior John Collier won both springboard events posting 373.55 points in the 3-meter and 318.55 points in the 1-meter. Junior Patrick Sullivan finished third in the 1-meter (279.35) and in the 3-meter (293.20).<\/p>\n
The women had an equally impressive dual-meet as they won a total of eight events. The 400 medley relay of seniors Jenna Gresdal, Erin Sieper, Lisa Pursley and freshman Lindsey Kelly won with a time of 3:41.51, which is currently the best time in the nation.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Lacey Nymeyer posted the second win for the Wildcats by taking first-place in the 200 freestyle (1:48.43) and senior Katie Willis finished second (1:51.63).<\/p>\n
Gresdal and Kelly took the top-two spots in the 50 freestyle with Gresdal swimming the sixth fastest time in the nation (23.11). In the 200 IM, junior Whitney Myers finished first (2:01.94) and she also finished first in the 200 butterfly (2:01.01).<\/p>\n
Arizona's Gresdal and freshman Taylor Baughman finished first and second in the 100 freestyle while freshman Kathryn Thompson and senior Marshi Smith also took the top-two spots in the 200 backstroke.<\/p>\n
Nymeyer won her second individual event in the 500 freestyle, swimming the race in a time of 4:52.79. Sieper finished second in the 200 breaststroke (2:15.13) and freshman Jessica Embick took third (2:19.06).<\/p>\n
For the final swimming event, the 400 free relay composed of Nymeyer, Baughman, senior Ryann Hackett and Pursley won with a time of 3:25.03, which was later counted as an exhibition race.<\/p>\n
In the diving well, senior Tiffany Manning finished second in both events as she tallied 308.10 points in the 1-meter and 290.40 points in the 3-meter. Sophomore Holly Kast finished fourth in the 1-meter with 224.70 points.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
