LONG BEACH, California, November 19. NOT surprisingly, the Stanford men and women continued to dominate the UC Irvine Speedo Cup, which reached its halfway mark on Friday. The competition is being held at Belmont Plaza and has featured some lightning-quick times from the Cardinal swimmers during the first two days of action.<\/p>\n
After winning the 500 free on Thursday, Andy Grant took top honors in the 200 free during the second day. Grant popped a dazzling time of 1:35.24, which was faster than the 1:37.23 of Danny Beal and the 1:38.68 of Shaun Phillips. Meanwhile, Tobias Oriwol was the victor in the 400 individual medley, as he registered a performance of 3:50.18.<\/p>\n
The Stanford men also received a victory from Jason Dunford in the 100 butterfly (49.03) and Hongzhe Sun prevailed in the 100 backstroke with an effort of 47.29. The Cardinal took first place in the 800 free relay in 6:30.16 and bested the field in the 200 medley relay (1:29.35). UC Irvine\u2019s Daniel Simonsen posted a win in the 100 breaststroke (55.35).<\/p>\n
For the women, Dana Kirk complemented a Thursday win in the 200 individual medley with a first-place showing in the 100 butterfly (53.93). She was supported as a Stanford winner by Laura Davis in the 400 I.M. (4:17.23) and Elizabeth Durot in the 200 free (1:48.57). Erica Liu touched the wall first in the 100 breast (1:03.52) and Brooke Bishop was fastest in the 100 back (53.94). The Cardinal won the 200 medley relay in 1:42.20 and the 800 free relay in 7:22.55.<\/p>\n
