GRAND FORKS, North Dakota. November, 16. WAY up in the freezing north the high school girls in North Dakota gathered to compete in the high school state championships.<\/p>\n
At the University of North Dakota pool seven new records were established, five of them in the preliminaries on Friday night. Dagne Knutson started things off breaking two meet records, one in the 200 IM, 2:05.73, and the other in the 100 fly 57.18. However, on Saturday she lost the 100 fly to Allison Maxwell and a 57.50, but kept her record. Knutson still won the 200 IM but fell short of her standard the day before with a 2:08.04.<\/p>\n
Kelsey Schoonhoven won the 100 freewith a 51.52 and the 100 back in meet record style, 56.72.<\/p>\n
Hannah Whitehead, a sophomore from Grand Forks Central, was the only double winner taking the 500 free in a 4:59.76, just short of her state mark set the day before, 4:58.49, and the 200 free in a 1:50.09 and a new state record.<\/p>\n
Sprinter Carissa Gormally won the 50 free with a 24.08 just one one-hundredth off her Friday state mark of 24.07. Gormally swam a 23.87 at her conference meet a few weeks earlier, racing to one of the fastest 50 frees ever recorded in North Dakota for a high school girl.
