BALTIMORE, Maryland, November 13. THE UMBC men\u2019s and women\u2019s swimming and diving teams swept a dual meet Saturday afternoon for the third time this season, as the women defeated local rival Towson, 146.5-85.5, to remain perfect at 6-0 and the men improved to 3-3 with their 94-58 victory. The Retriever men and women swept every event from the Tigers.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Meghan Sackett (Cockeysville, Md.\/Dulaney\/Maryland) broke UMBC\u2019s 16-year-old 500-yard freestyle record with a time of 4:53.57. Sue Herzog set the previous mark at 4:54.20 in 1989. It was the second record in as many meets which Sackett has bested, as she shattered Herzog\u2019s 1,000 free record by nearly 12 seconds last Sunday at Seton Hall. Sackett also won the 200-free (1:52.03).<\/p>\n
Freshman Daniele Surkovich (Ellicott City, Md.\/Wilde Lake), junior Agnes Stanislawska (Zielona Gora, Poland\/LO VI Zielona Gora) and junior Ashley Houghton (Frederick, Md.\/Urbana\/Pittsburgh) also won two events apiece. Surkovich took the 50 free (24.65) and the 200 fly (2:10.94), while Stanislawska won the 200 IM (2:08.86) and the 200 breast (2:21.47). Houghton swept the diving events for the sixth consecutive meet with scores of 253.13 on the 1-meter board and 260.62 on the 3-meter.<\/p>\n
The men were led by junior Tim Conway (Brick, N.J.\/Brick Township Memorial), freshman Justin Bronson (Oshawa, Ontario, Canada\/MSGR. Paul Dwyer) and junior Jeff Salgado (Glen Rock, Pa.\/South Western\/St. Bonaventure), who each notched two individual victories. Conway won the 50 free (22.05) and the 100 free (48.59), while Bronson took the 200 free (1:43.87) and the 500 free (4:41.14).
