BLOOMINGTON, Ind. November, 5. THE No. 15 women\u2019s swimming and diving team increased its record to 4-2 on the season by thrashing the Illinois Fighting Illini, 168-121, at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., on Nov. 5. Overall, the Hoosiers snared 14 titles with freshman Allison Kay, junior Annica Lofstedt and junior Leila Vaziri each seizing three crowns.<\/p>\n

In the opening event of the afternoon, the Hoosiers went one-three to take a 13-4 lead as the Indiana contingent of Vaziri, freshman Sarah Stockwell, Kay and Lofstedt took first in the 200-yard medley relay with a sparkling time of 1:45.37. Meanwhile, the IU quartet of freshman Kristin Cihoski, freshman Kristy Winck, junior Susanna Ernst and freshman Mary Elizabeth Miller finished third in 1:49.04. The Illinois team of junior Meghan Farrell, senior Kathryn Easey, senior Christina Brunka and junior Rebecca Poetz split the Hoosiers with a second-place 1:48.39 in the event.<\/p>\n

The Hoosiers swept the top-two spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle to extend their lead to 28-8. Senior Lauren Torpey scorched the field with a dominant time of 10:18.57, while sophomore Christie Fuchs placed second in 10:32.57. Illinois senor Britta Jansson rounded out the top three with a 10:33.38 for third.<\/p>\n

In the 200-yard freestyle, Indiana pushed out to a 42-13 lead as junior Clarissa Wentworth (1:51.23) touched out Illinois junior Barbie Viney (1:51.38) as she powered by the Illini swimmer in the final stretch. Meanwhile, senior Doherty Colgin captured third place in 1:52.75.<\/p>\n

he Hoosiers swept the top-three in the 100-yard backstroke as Vaziri smoked the field with a blazing 57.11, while Ernst finished second in 59.36 and Cihoski placed third in 59.97. After the event, Indiana held a 58-16 advantage.<\/p>\n

In the 100-yard breaststroke, the Hoosiers brought home the top-two spots as Stockwell claimed the crown in 1:05.40, while classmate Abby Cooper took second in 1:06.05. For the Illini, freshman Marissa Clapp placed third in 1:06.60. The Hoosiers held a 72-21 lead after the event.<\/p>\n

The Hoosiers stretched their lead to 87-25 after the 200-yard butterfly with another top-two sweep. Kay paced the field with a solid 2:03.10, while Fuchs claimed second in 2:05.36. Meanwhile, Illinois junior Jessica Rothenberg wound up third in 2:07.93.<\/p>\n

In the 50-yard freestyle, Lofstedt clocked a first-place time of 23.68, while Illinois\u2019 Viney placed second in 24.01 and teammate Farrell finished third in 24.06. After the event, IU led 99-32.<\/p>\n

IU moved out to a 110-40 advantage in the 100-yard freestyle as Lofstedt cleared the B-cut standard with a first-place 50.83. Meanwhile, Illinois; Viney (51.84) and Farrell (52.93) placed two-three.<\/p>\n

In the 200-yard backstroke, the Hoosiers captured the title with Vaziri touching first in 2:04.41. Illinois sophomore Meghan Bradley placed second in 2:09.27, while teammate Meghan Conner finished third in 2:16.19. IU\u2019s Ernst clocked a time of 2:07.41 in a non-scoring effort. At the end of the event, IU held a 119-49 advantage.<\/p>\n

In the 200-yard breaststroke, the Illini finally broke IU\u2019s iron grip on the event hardware as Clapp won in 2:19.74, while Winck claimed second for IU in 2:21.67. Additionally, Easey finished third for Illinois in 2:24.01. Upon completion of the event, the Hoosiers retained a 123-63 lead.<\/p>\n

The Hoosiers broke back into the win column with a Colgin conquest of the 500-yard freestyle with a 5:03.07 to touch well ahead of the rest of the field. Illinois\u2019 Jansson placed second in 5:08.17, while teammate Kellie Stevens took third in 5:11.40. IU remained in the lead 132-72 after the event.<\/p>\n

Kay claimed the 200-yard butterfly for the Hoosiers in 56.96, while Illinois junior Michelle Grandcolas placed second in 58.70. Brunka closed out the top three with a 59.93 time. The Hoosiers maintained a 141-81 lead after the event.<\/p>\n

In the grueling 400-yard IM, senior Kristen Bradley hit the NCAA provisional standard on the dot with a 4:23.60 to claim victory. Meanwhile, Illinois\u2019 Rothenberg placed second in 4:31.94, while teammate Clapp took third in 4:37.40. Additionally, Kay touched in 4:25.56 in a non-scoring performance. At the end of the event, the Hoosiers owned a 150-90 lead.<\/p>\n

The Illini swim corps left Bloomington with some momentum for their next meet as they captured the 200-yard freestyle relay as the Illinois group of Viney, Grandcolas, Poetz and Farrell touched first in 1:35.41. The Hoosiers placed both relays in a non-scoring capacity as Lofstedt, Wentworth, Vaziri and Cooper clocked a 1:35.52. Additionally, the quartet of Colgin, Stockwell, Cihoski and Bradley came in at 1:39.94. At the end of the swimming competition, IU held a 150-105 lead.<\/p>\n

In the diving portion of the meet, sophomore Christina Loukas won the one-meter title with a 308.77, while senior Heather Chapman recorded a 269.55 in a non-scoring effort. Additionally, junior Lindsay Weigle cleared the zone mark with a 258.09 in non-scoring action.<\/p>\n

In the three-meter, Weigle captured the crown with a 307.12, while Loukas (289.72), sophomore Ashley Greene (286.35) and senior Lisa Silvestri (280.65) all cleared the zone standard. With diving performances and additional exhibitioning included, the Hoosiers captured a 168-121 triumph.<\/p>\n

Next up, the Hoosiers host the IU Invitational at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center in Bloomington, Ind., from Nov. 18-20.<\/p>\n
