NANJING, China, October 19. AS the host of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China has promised it will turn in a stellar performance. Certainly, China is moving in the right direction in the pool, clearly evident in the results from the Chinese National Games.<\/p>\n
During the past two days, the competition has produced some high-quality efforts, including an Asian record in the 200 backstroke from Ouyang Kunpeng. After setting an Asian record in the 100 back earlier in the meet, Ouyang covered the 200 dorsal distance in 1:57.91. His effort, though, was far from the only sterling showing, as Qu Jingyu established a national record in the 200 individual medley with a mark of 2:00.59, ahead of the 2:01.40 from Wu Peng.<\/p>\n
Wu Peng also finished second in the 100 butterfly, behind the national-record swim of Zhou Jiawei (52.81). Wu was clocked in 53.10 and has already won titles in the 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly. In the women\u2019s 100 free, Zhu Yingwen scorched 54.03 for the win and was followed to the wall by Xu Yanwei (54.15) and Pang Yiajing (54.55).<\/p>\n
The winner of the 400 free, Yang Jieqiao added the 800 free crown to her stash when she negotiated the race in 8:29.12, just ahead of Yu Rui (8:29.98). Meanwhile, Qi Hui edged Luo Xuejuan in the 200 breaststroke and Cai Li won the men\u2019s 50 free (22.87).
