ATHENS, Georgia, October 13. THE University of Georgia men and women opened their seasons on Wednesday by knocking off North Carolina in action at Gabrielsen Natatorium. The men earned a 193-102 triumph while the women claimed a decision of 169-126. The Georgia women are the defending NCAA champions.<\/p>\n
"That was a good meet for us," Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said. "It's nice to get the first two wins of the season. Both teams still have a long way to go to be where we want to be, but it was a very good start to the season." <\/p>\n
Gil Stovall and Sebastien Rouault were double-winners on the male side, with Stovall claiming top honors in the 200 butterfly (1:47.85) and the 200 backstroke (1:51.36). Rouault, meanwhile, won the 500 free in 4:31.21 and bested the field in the 1,000 free with a mark of 9:18.07. Nathan Bibliowicz doubled in the 100 and 200 freestyles and Cameron Hollinger and Peter Verhoef tied in the 50 free.<\/p>\n
For the women, Kara Lynn Joyce led the way with victories in the 50 and 100 freestyles (23.32\/50.06) and teamed with Mary DeScenza, Sarah Poewe and Karen Guikey on the victorious 200 medley relay. DeScenza prevailed in the 100 butterfly and finished just behind Joyce in the 100 free with a time of 50.22.
