SYDNEY, Australia, October 7. IN leading off the Australian 800 freestyle relay at last summer\u2019s World Championships in Montreal, Libby Lenton popped a dazzling time of 1:57.06, the fourth-fastest mark in history. Now, Lenton is shooting for the world record of Franziska Van Almsick, a 1:56.64 produced in 2002.<\/p>\n
According to an article by the Australian Associated Press, Lenton believes the record could go down at next year\u2019s Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, largely due to the fact that countrywoman Jodie Henry is also eyeing a run at the event. Henry is the reigning Olympic and world champ in the 100 freestyle and the global-standard holder in that discipline.<\/p>\n
"I think any one of us has a real opportunity at taking on the rest of the world in that event," Lenton said. \u201cI think it is a fairly wide open event. No one has really dominated it that much over the past few years. In that respect, it is exciting for me to take it on."<\/p>\n
Lenton will try to qualify for the Commonwealth Games in four events, the 50, 100 and 200 freestyles and the 100 butterfly. At the World Champs, Lenton won gold in the 50 free and took silver in the 100 fly.
