October 2. DOCTORS in Poland say Olympic star Otylia Jedrzejczak, 21, is recovering from severe injuries to her head and spine suffered in an auto accident Saturday that killed her 19 year-old brother, Szymon, and that she is lucky to be alive. <\/p>\n

Saturday night her condition was upgraded from "critical" to "stable" and she was moved from the hospital in Plock, where she was treated immediately after the accident, to one in Warsaw.<\/p>\n

Dr. Robert Smigielski, team physician for the Polish Olympic swim team, told channel TVN24, "we need to secure her spine so the healing process can begin." Dr. Smigielski held out hope that Jedrzejczak will be able to compete again, adding: "If she could get back to her former condition after six months, it would be super."<\/p>\n

According to friends of the swimmer in Poland and the U.S., Otylia is being attended to by her grief-stricken parents as well as coaches, Dr. Smigielski and a team psychologist. Reportedly, she is slowly realizing the extent of the tragedy that has occurred.<\/p>\n
