HELSINKI, Finland, September 20. LAST weekend, a group of 20 Finnish swimmers broke a 23-year-old world record, a standard not of the typical variety. The swimmers covered 184,994 meters during a 24-hour relay period, breaking the global record for that length of time. The former record of 182,807 was established in 1982 by a group from New Zealand.<\/p>\n
The 20 Finnish swimmers represented six clubs and included National Team members Matti Rajakyla, Jarno Pihlava and Matti Maki. Rajakyla competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens in the 100 freestyle while Maki contested the 100 and 200 backstroke events at the last Olympiad.
