\nGROVE CITY, PA – Grove City College has added men’s and women’s water polo to its varsity sports line-up for the 1999-2000 academic year, thanks to a $60,000 grant from the United States Olympic Committee, through a partnership with the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The grant is being made through United States Water Polo, Inc., the sport’s national governing organization and will serve as “seed money” to establish a new program. <\/p>\n
Keith Bullion, who serves as the school’s head men’s swimming and diving coach, will direct both the men’s and women’s water polo squads. Bullion, regarded as one of the top water polo coaches and administrators in the region, was a natural choice to lead both programs. A 1983 Grove City graduate. Bullion served as water polo chairman and tournament director at the World University Games in Buffalo in 1993. He has served as the water polo tournament director at the Empire State Games for the last seven years. <\/p>\n
Grove City’s men’s team will compete in the Southern Division against Bucknell University, George Washington University, Johns Hopkins University, the U.S. Naval Academy, Princeton University, nearby Slippery Rock University, Salem-Teikyo University and PAC member Washington & Jefferson College, who also added water polo in 1999. Gannon University and Penn State Behrend College are expected to join in 2000. The men’s season runs in the fall with a national championship event in November. The Wolverines open their inaugural season on September 11 when they host Johns Hopkins, Princeton and W&J. <\/p>\n
The women’s team will play in the Mid-Atlantic Division, which may include teams from Georgetown University, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, James Madison University, the University of Maryland, the University of Pennsylvania, Penn State University, the University of Richmond and West Chester University, as well as Bucknell, Gannon and Salem-Teikyo.
