NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has gained a new in-state commitment from Virginia Beach, Va. native Julia Smith. Smith will join her club teammate Charlie Burt in Blacksburg this fall.

Smith swims year-round with Tide Swimming and owns the U.S. Open cut in the 100 breast with the Winter Nationals standard in the 200 breast. She recorded a pair of best times and 12th-place finishes at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Knoxville earlier this month after placing 21st in the 100 breast at Juniors East. She raced to 13th in both the 100 and 200 breast at Richmond Futures this past summer after placing fifth and seventh, respectively, in those events at Virginia LCM Seniors. Also competing for Ocean Lakes High School, Smith finished ninth in the 100 free and tenth in the 100 breast during her junior season.

She told Swimming World:

“I am ecstatic to announce my commitment to continue my swim and academic career at Virginia Tech! A special thanks to my coaches, family, and friends for all of their support through this adventure. I cannot wait to officially join the Hokie family!! #GoHokies”

 Her best times include:

  • 100 breast – 1:02.69
  • 200 breast – 2:18.44
  • 50 free – 24.55
  • 100 free – 52.63

When she suits up for the Hokies as a member of the class of 2023, she’ll add her talents to a breaststroke group that will include Joelle Vereb, Baillie Cameron and Annalee Johnson. She currently sits just outside of scoring range at the ACC Championships; it took a 1:02.51 to score in the 100 breast last season.
