Virginia and Virginia Tech to Tangle in Commonwealth Challenge

LYNCHBURG, Virginia, August 31. THE University of Virginia and Virginia Tech have announced that the schools will compete against one another during the 2005-06 athletic season in the Commonwealth Challenge. Members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, Virginia and Virginia Tech will keep track of a point total that will determine which school emerges on top between the in-state rivals.

Adelphia Communications, the fifth-largest cable company in the nation, will partner with the institutions and the school that prevails will be awarded a trophy that consists of the red brick prevalent at the University of Virginia and the limestone featured at Virginia Tech. The winner of each individual sport will be presented with a traveling plaque

"The Commonwealth Challenge will be a unique way for fans to follow all of the sport competitions between Virginia Tech and UVA," said Jim Weaver, the Athletic Director at Virginia Tech. "It will add to the excitement of the competition between our schools. We are excited about this annual athletic challenge."
