USMS Championships Day 3: Maurine Kornfeld Wins Second Race at 100-104; Ally Howe Shines Again

One of the best parts of the United States Masters Swimming (USMS) Spring Championships – and masters swimming in general – is that is for all ages of adults.

Anyone from 20 years old and up can compete.

Rose Bowl Masters swimmer Maurine Kornfeld proved age is just a number with her second win of the meet in the 100-104 age group.

She won the 100-104 age group in the 50 backstroke. She got to the wall in 1:37.63 one day after setting the age group record in the 50 free on a relay lead-off.

Former Stanford NCAA champion Ally Howe claimed her third win of the meet with a swim of 54.40 in the 100 butterfly to win the 25-29 age group title. Felicia Lee won the 30-34 group with a swim of 55.52.

Howe then made it four USMS titles by winning the 100 IM in 55.65.

Lee won the 50 back in 26.17.

Jenny Thompson claimed her third title with a win in the 50-54 50 backstroke (27.40).

Laura Val also added another title to the list, winning the 70-74 age group in the 50 backstroke (30.72).

Nova’s Roberto Delgado had a stellar swim to win the 100 fly in 52.77 in the 45-49 age group.

Nova teammate Steve West earned his second win of the meet with a 2:03.67 performance in the 50-54 age group in the 200 breaststroke – a stunning 22 seconds ahead of the field. The former Swimming World staffer then won the 100 IM in 54.20.

Former Swimming World staffer Jeff Commings won the 100 IM in the 45-49 age group with a swim of 53.04.

Sunday’s final session will include the 400 IM, 50 free, 200 butterfly, 100 backstroke, 200 free, 50 breast and mixed medley relay.
