USA Swimming National Championships: Day One Prelims

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, July 7. THE preliminary session of the ConocoPhillips National Championships took place this morning at the IU Natatorium.

Women's 100m Butterfly
American Record-holder Christine Magnuson (Tennessee Aquatics) finished with a time of 57.39 for the top seed in tonight's 100 butterfly finals. At the 50-meter mark, Magnuson clocked a time of 26.58 — .09 seconds faster than World Record pace. The World Record was set by Inge de Bruijin of the Netherlands in 2000.

Stanford's Elaine Breeden took second with a time of 57.61 and Dana Vollmer of California Aquatics placed third (57.93).

Other top eight finishers include Mary Descenza (58.51), Kathleen Hersey (58.66), Felicia Lee (58.79), Kate Dwelley (59.05), and Alexandra Forrester (59.52).

Men's 400m Freestyle
Peter Vanderkaay, who anchored the 800 freestyle relay in Beijing last summer, earned the top seed in tonight's 400 freestyle finals with a time of 3:49.97.

Club Wolverine teammates Daniel Madwed and Adam Dejong, who competed in the same preliminary heat as Vanderkaay, finished second (3:50.91) and third (3:51.68) respectively.

Other top eight finishers include Jackson Wilcox (3:52.18), Jean Basson (3:53.24), Matthew Barber (3:53.43), Michael Klueh (3:53.85), and Dominik Meichtry (3:53.86).

Women's 200m Individual Medley
Stanford's Julia Smit clocked a time of 2:10.54 in the 200 IM for the top seed in tonight's 200 IM finals. Smit was seeded sixth with a qualifying time of 2:12.36.

16-year-old Elizabeth Beisel (Bluefish Swim Club) took second with a time of 2:11.65 followed closely by KING's Ariana Kukors (2:11.68).

Other top eight finishers include Elizabeth Pelton (2:11.75), Dagny Knutson (2:11.87), Catlin Leverenz (2:12.75), Justine Mueller (2:13.40), and Whitney Myers (2:13.66).

Men's 100m Breaststroke
Eric Shanteau of Longhorn Aquatics, who qualified for the 2008 Olympics in the 200 breaststroke, broke the 1-minute barrier in the 100-meter breaststroke preliminaries. He is the top seed in tonight's competition with a time of 59.89.

Shantau's teammate, Scott Spann, took second with a time of 1:00.10 and Mark Gangloff of SwimMAC Carolina qualified third (1:00.21).

Other top eight finishers include Matthew Lowe (1:00.23), Marcus Titus (1:00.25), George Klein (1:00.72), Clark Burckle (1:01.59), and Robert Lovelace (1:01.75).

Women's 400m Freestyle
Club Wolverine's Allison Schmitt will be the top seed in tonight's 400 freestyle finals with a time of 4:08.53.

American Record-holder Katie Hoff of North Baltimore clocked a time of 4:10.79 for second place, while Alyssa Anderson (Una FORD) finished third (4:11.14).

Other top eight finishers include Samantha Shellem (4:11.35), Caroline Burckle (4:11.39), Chloe Sutton (4:12.01), Amber McDermott (4:12.68), and Margaret Bird (4:13.19).

Men's 400m Individual Medley
Tyler Clary ended the first day of preliminaries with the top seed in tonight's 400 IM finals. He clocked a time of 4:11.29.

Ryan Lochte, a World Record-holder in the 200 backstroke and the 800 freestyle relay, took second with a time of 4:15.63. Robert Margalis qualified third (4:16.30).

Other top eight finishers include Clark Burckle (4:18.06), Jack Brown (4:18.23), Andrew Gemmell (4:20.53), Bryan Collins (4:21.17), and Christopher Nuess (4:22.78).
