UNLV Invitational Concludes: Coughlin Wins Five Events

Coughlin Adds Age Group 200 Back Record: Natalie Coughlin of the Terrapins was the dominate presence at this year’s just concluded UNLV Invitational held at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. After setting an American record in the 100 yard backstroke (52.55) in Saturday’s finals, Coughlin went on to win a total of five events and added a 15-16 national age group record 1:53.45 in the 200 yard backstroke. Her time broke Janie Wagstaff’s record of 1:56.14 by 2.7 seconds and fell just .47 seconds short of Whitney Hedgepeth’s American record 1:52.98. Coughlin’s other wins came in the 100 fly (52.91), 200 fly (1:56.26), and 400 IM (4:09.97).

A triple winner at the meet was Carl Larson of UCSB, who won the 400 IM (3:54.06), the 500 free (4:25.17) and the 1650 free (15:10.47, an NCAA Division I automatic time). Double winners at the meet included Amanda Beard, NOVA, in both breaststrokes (1:02.27 and 2:13.56), Steve West, TYR, also in both breaststrokes (53.37 and 2:00.52), Michael Mintenko, Team Rebel, in the 100 fly (49.07) and 200 free (1:38.63), Suzu Chiba, Golden West, in the 500 free (4:48.39) and 200 free (1:47.76). The sprint freestyles belonged to NOVA’s Jessica Hayes (23.69 in the 50, 50.94 in the 100) and Jason Lezak (20.55 in the 50, 44.90 in the 100).

Other winners on Sunday and Monday included Joel Shapiro, University of Tennessee, in the 200 fly (1:50.09), Aaron Piersol, NOVA, in the 200 back (1:48.34), and Jamie Cail, MVN, in the 1650 freestyle (16:36.14). The 1000 freestyles were won by Kaitlin Sandeno, NGSV (9:48.02) and Michael Rosen, UNLV (9:21.62). The women’s 800 freestyle relay provided the relay highlight when Santa Clara touched out Redlands 7:37.19 to 7:37.30 with Mission in third at 7:38.28; UNLV won the men’s 800 relay in 6:49.75. NOVA won the women’s 400 free relay in 3:28.74; UNLV won the men’s 400 free relay in 3:08.10.
