Harvard and Penn combined for two meet records on the second night of the 2018 Ivy League Championships. Harvard’s Brennan Novak posted an NCAA ‘B’ cut in the 500 freestyle while Penn’s Mark Andrew did likewise in the 200 IM.

Harvard is still on top after two days of competition with 563 points. Princeton is currently in second with 459 while Yale is in third with 377. They are followed by Columbia (364), Penn (355), Cornell (237) and Dartmouth (203).

Tomorrow’s events include: 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke, 1000 Freestyle and 4 x 100 Medley Relay. Heat sheets for prelims can be found here.

500 Freestyle

Junior Brennan Novak kept the Harvard winning streak alive in the first individual event of these Championships. His 4:13.34 smashed the previous school record set in 2002 by over three seconds. He also re-wrote the meet and pool records in this event. Teammate Logan Houck was third in 4:16.08, also under the previous Harvard record, while sophomore Zach Snyder won the B final in 4:21.03.

After a great split in last night’s 4 x 200 Freestyle Relay, Yale’s Kei Hyogo swam to a season best 4:15.32 for second place. The swim broke his own school record set at last year’s Ivy League Championship. Fellow Bulldog Adrian Lin was eighth in 4:22.15.

Penn’s Taylor Uselis was fourth in 4:20.32 and was followed by Columbia’s Michal Zyla in 4:20.57 and Princeton’s Murphy McQuet in 4:21.29. Penn’s Will Thomas was the only freshman in the heat, finishing seventh in 4:21.71. Dartmouth’s Connor Lamastra raced to sixteenth place in the B final, but set a new school record of 4:23.88 in the preliminary heats.

200 IM

The Penn men were able to break up the Crimson madness in the 200 IM as junior Mark Andrew (1:43.24) and Thomas Dillinger (1:44.99) finished first and third, respectively. Andrew set new meet, pool and program records with his swim. Princeton senior Zach Buerger split the two coming in at 1:44.77. Buerger was winning handedly at the 100 mark, but could not withstand a blistering 29.32 breaststroke split from Andrew.

Harvard’s top swim came from sophomore Daniel Chang in 1:45.77, a season best. Teammate Koya Osada did likewise to place sixth in 1:46.60. Yale’s Jonathan Rutter was fifth in 1:45.96 while Princeton’s Corey Okubo (1:46.61) and Columbia’s Shane Brett (1:47.42) rounded out the heat.

Despite a gain in finals, Brett’s prelim swim of 1:46.64 tied the Columbia program record formerly set by Kevin Quinn in 2015. However, senior teammate Jae Park then beat both swimmers with his win in the B final at 1:46.27. Teammate Zach Thomas was also close by coming in second in the B final in 1:46.80.

4 x 50 Freestyle Relay

Despite a few individual losses, the Harvard men continued their relay sweep by achieving an NCAA ‘A’ cut time of 1:17.47 in the 4 x 50 Freestyle Relay. And of note – the relay did not include 2017 All-American Dean Farris who swam in this event last season. Marcoux, Tan, Kim and O’Hara all booked their tickets to the NCAA Championships en route to a championship title and school record in this event.

Princeton was second in 1:18.43 while Yale took third in 1:18.67. The latter was a new program record by nearly one full second. Columbia (1:19.56), Penn (1:19.83), Cornell (1:21.50) and Dartmouth (1:22.59) placed fourth through seventh.
