Torres Bows Out of 100 Free; Nymeyer Gets Spot

OMAHA, Nebraska, July 7. USA Swimming has announced that Dara Torres will not swim the 100 freestyle in Beijing. Torres, who won the event at the Olympic Trials, has passed on the event and will focus on the 50 freestyle, where she set an American record of 24.25 on Sunday night.

Making her fifth Olympic Team, the 41-year-old Torres needs more time to recover than in the past and an additional three races – if she made the final – could affect her efforts in the 50 free. More, Torres is expected to race the 400 free relay.

With Torres out, her 100 free spot goes to Lacey Nymeyer, the third-place finisher at Trials. Natalie Coughlin will also race the 100 free for the United States.
