Three-time European medallist Simone Sabbioni has been banned for 20 months for an anti-doping violation under the whereabouts rule.

Athletes are required to provide up-to-date location information so they can be located for out-of-competition testing under the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) code.

Three failures to properly file whereabouts information or being absent during the hour stated in a 12-month period can result in a one or two-year suspension.

Sabbioni’s suspension runs from 23 March 2022 and will expire on 22 November 2023 with all his results from the former invalidated.

The Italian Anti-Doping Agency stated:

“Pursuant to the former art. 11.8.2 CSA (art 10.8.2 WADA Code 2021) this is the provision of the agreement signed by the National Anti-Doping Prosecutor, as the competent authority for the management of the results, by Mr. Simone Sabbioni (FIN) and by WADA:

“to mr. Simone Sabbioni (FIN) is subject to the sanction of 20 months of disqualification for the violation of the art. 2.4 of the CSA, with effect of the sanction from 03.23.2022 and expiring on 11.22.2023 included.

“Pursuant to art. 11.10 CSA, all sporting results obtained by the Athlete as of 03.23.2022 are invalidated with all related consequences, including loss of medals, points and prizes.”

Sabbioni competed at the Tokyo Olympics where he finished joint 17th in the 100 back – 0.02 off the semis – and led off the Italian quartet in the heats of the mixed medley relay before being replaced by Thomas Ceccon in the final where they finished fourth.
