By Phillip Whitten

The U.S. swim team competing at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Athens, Greece, set to begin on Thursday, has elected Jenny Thompson and Dr. Ron Karnaugh as the U.S. women's and men's team captains, respectively.

Thompson, 26, a 1992 and '96 Olympian, holds the short course world record in the 50 and 100 meter butterfly and 100 meter individual medley, and is expected to contend is those events. Karnaugh, the oldest American on the team and the first-ever physician to compete as a member of the U.S. team, is the American record holder in the 400 meter individual medley. However, he will be focusing on his best event, the 200 IM in Athens.
