Texas Men’s Swimming and Diving

* The Longhorns return to action this weekend when they travel to No.19 Texas A&M. Texas defeated the Aggies (238-131) the last time the two schools faced off on Jan. 26-27, 2001. The Horns are a perfect
22-0 vs. Texas A&M under the direction of head coach Eddie Reese (since 1979).

* Texas was victorious its last time out, posting a 135.5-101.5 win against No. 16 Georgia on Jan. 12, at the Jamail Texas Swim Center. The Horns were led to victory by the efforts of five different individual race winners.

* UT fell one spot to No. 3 in the latest edition of the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Top 25 Poll released on Jan. 17. The Horns have been ranked in the top three since Nov. 13, 1997.

* Senior-diver Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) posted a perfect outing during UT’s last competitions against No. 3 Auburn and No. 16 Georgia, Jan. 11-12. The two-time NCAA Diver of the Year swept the dual meet field, capturing four first-place finishes in both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events.

* The Texas men’s team won its second consecutive NCAA Championship last year and its eighth title (1981, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1996, 2000) in school history. The Longhorns return 11 of 16 All-Americans
and 20 of 26 letterwinners from the 2000-01 NCAA Championship team.

THIS WEEK: The third-ranked University of Texas men’s swimming and diving team returns to dual meet competition this week as it travels to take on Big 12 Conference rival No. 19 Texas A&M on Saturday, Jan.
26, at the Texas A&M Student Rec Center Natatorium in College Station, Texas. The first race is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.

SO WE MEET AGAIN: Saturday’s meet will mark the second time the Longhorns have competed against the Aggies this season, but it will be the first in dual meet competition. Texas A&M won the 2001 Big 12 Relay Meet on Oct. 19 in Columbia, Mo. The Aggies tallied 104
points, four points ahead of second-place Texas.

SERIES WITH TEXAS A&M: Texas is a perfect 22-0 against Texas A&M under head coach Eddie Reese (since 1979), including a 238-131 win last year at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center in Austin. Reese’s record vs. Texas A&M is his personal best against any single opponent.

BREAKING DOWN THE AGGIES: Texas A&M participated in three different meets over two days during its last time out (Jan. 18-19). The Aggies began their busy weekend with a full squad dual meet, defeating No. 23 Louisiana State (141-89) in Baton Rouge. Following
the meet, a small contingent of the A&M squad flew to Dallas to compete in The Dallas Morning News Swimming & Diving Classic (5th, 261 pts.). The remaining members of the team traveled to Monroe, La., to compete against Louisiana-Monroe (W, 141-80).

LAST TIME OUT: Competing in its second dual meet in as many days, the No. 2 UT men’s team posted a 135.5-101.5 win over No. 16 Georgia on Jan. 12 at the Jamail Texas Swimming Center. The win came after the Horns first dual meet defeat of the season, a 145-98 setback to No. 3 Auburn the previous day in Austin.

ON A ROLL: Senior-diver Troy Dumais (Ventura, Calif.) turned in a noteworthy performance during UT’s recent dual meets against Auburn and Georgia. The two-time NCAA Diver of the Year ran the table during the two-meet stretch, posting first-place performances in all
four competitions on both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events. Dumais has totalled a 4-0 mark on the three-meter board this season, while also winning three straight competitions on the one-meter. The most decorated diver in UT history, he is the
three-time defending NCAA Champion on the three-meter springboard and the two-time defending champ on the one-meter board.

LEADING THE WAY: While becoming mainstays on the winners stand for the Longhorns this year, junior Chris Kemp (Southlake, Texas) and sophomore Brendan Hansen (Havertown, Pa.) are also leading the way
for the rest of the nation. Kemp’s time of 1:36.02 in the 200 freestyle and Hansen’s times of 53.57 in the 100 breaststroke and 1:56.09 in the 200 breast currently stand as the fastest collegiate times during 2001-02, according to Taper & Shave’s College Quick 50
released on Jan. 16. The Horns also have shown dominance in relay events, posting the nation’s fastest times in both the 200 (1:27.69)
and 400 (3:12.03) medley relays.

DOMINATING THE CONFERENCE FIELD: Although Saturday’s meet against Texas A&M will mark Texas’ lone dual meet against an opponent from the Big 12 during 2001-02, the Longhorns have continued their dominance in the overall conference times standings. UT holds the
top swimming time or diving score in 20 out of a total of 21 possible events (through Jan. 15).

IN THE NATIONAL RANKINGS: Texas is ranked No. 3 in the latest edition of the CSCAA Top 25 poll, released on Jan. 13. The Horns received 183 points, trailing only No. 1 Stanford (200) and No. 2 Auburn (192).

HIGHLIGHTS OF SUMMER COMPETITION: Hansen and Crocker highlighted all Texas men’s swimmers at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. Hansen captured the 200-meter breaststroke gold medal in a meet-record time of 2:10.69, while Crocker took the silver in the 100 butterfly (52.25). Crocker’s second-place performance broke his previous American record of 52.44 set at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. At the 2001 U.S. National Championships, seniors Tommy Hannan
(Baltimore, Md.) and Joe Montague (Houston, Texas) both won silver medals – Hannan in the 100-meter butterfly (53.91) and Montague in the 200 IM (2:02.04). Justin Dumais led the way for UT divers at the Speedo Outdoor National Diving Championships, winning four gold medals (3m, synchro 3m, platform, synchro platform).

2001 NCAA CHAMPIONS: The Texas men’s swimming and diving team captured its second consecutive NCAA title at the 2001 NCAA Championships. A total of nine American and eight NCAA records were broken at the meet with the Longhorns setting six of those records.
The Longhorns claimed their eighth NCAA team title in UT history after posting 597.5 points. Stanford finished second (457.5) and Tennessee (330.5) placed third. Texas posted a UT-record seven individual titles and four relay crowns at the meet.

MEN’S HEAD COACH EDDIE REESE: Head coach Eddie Reese is in his 24th season at the helm of the Texas men’s swimming program. During his tenure, the Longhorns have won seven of the last 14 NCAA Championships and an incredible 22 consecutive conference titles.
Last year, he led the Longhorns to their eighth NCAA Championship. Reese has coached 31 NCAA individual champions, 25 National Champion relays, 120 All-Americans and 18 Olympians. Those Olympians have
claimed 19 gold medals in four Olympiads.

HEAD DIVING COACH: Matt Scoggin begins his eighth year at Texas as the head diving coach, where he has clearly established UT as one of the nation’s top men’s and women’s diving programs. A former U.S.
Olympic diver and a 2000 USA Olympic men’s assistant diving coach, Scoggin has been recognized nationally for his outstanding efforts. He was selected NCAA Women’s Diving Coach of the Year for 1996-97,
1997-98 and 1998-99, as well as the NCAA Men’s Diving Coach of the Year in 2000-01. Additionally, Scoggin is a four-time Big 12 Conference Women’s Diving Coach of the Year and was the 1994-95 Southwest Conference (SWC) Women’s and Men’s Diving Coach of the
Year. Scoggin has also coached the U.S. National Team seven times, including his most recent appointment as the head coach of the national team that competed at the 2001 World Championships in Fukuoka, Japan (July 22-29).
