Tennessee Sweeps Male Awards at SEC Weekly Honors

Tennessee swept the first SEC Weekly Honors of the season on the men’s side, with Jordan Crooks as swimmer of the week, Bryden Hattie as diver of the week and Gui Caribe as freshman of the week. The SEC released its first weekly honors listing on Tuesday.

Alabama’s Rhyan White added to her career tally of women’s swimmer of the week awards. Georgia’s Meghan Wenzel is the diver of the week, with Betsy Wizard of Arkansas as the freshman of the week.

Crooks went 19.36 in the men’s 50 free to lead the Volunteers to a season-opening win over UNC Wilmington. That’s the fastest time in the nation this season. The  Cayman Islands Olympian also won the 100 butterfly and swam on a winning 200 medley relay.

Hattie swept the diving events against UNC Wilmington. The Canadian set a personal-best score on 3-meter at 412.30.

Caribe, a rookie from Brazil, was second to Crooks in the 50 free. He won the 100 free in 43.86 and anchored the 200 medley relay. He also swam a leg on the Volunteers’ 200 free relay squad.

White started the season by breaking a pair of Arkansas Natatorium records in a season-opening win over Razorbacks. The American Olympian and graduate student went 52.68 in the 100 back and 1:51.81 in the 200 back. She also won the 200 individual medley.

Wenzel prevailed in the 3-meter event in a double-dual against Arizona State and Missouri. She scored 309.70 to grab gold. She also finished second on 1-meter as the Bulldogs won both meets.

The wonderfully named Wizard, a native of Northampton, England, picked up a pair of wins against Alabama in her NCAA debut. She won the 100 fly and 200 free, the latter in a time of 1:46.35 that is the fastest in the nation at this early juncture. She also swam on a victorious 400 free relay.
