SwimAtlanta’s Sydney Starnes Lends 2023 Verbal Pledge to Virginia Tech

NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has received a new verbal commitment for the fall of 2023 from Junior National qualifier Sydney Starnes of Marietta, Georgia.

She will join Kate Anderson as a member of the Hokies’ Class of 2027.

She told Swimming World:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech!! Thank you to my amazing family, teammates, and friends for supporting me over the years. Also, a big thank you to Coach Rick, Pat, and Tyler for encouraging me and getting me to where I am today!! Thank you to Coach Sergio and Jacy for giving me this wonderful opportunity! GO HOKIES”

A talented mid-distance freestyler and IMer, Starnes does her club swimming with SwimAtlanta and most recently competed at the Bahamas National Championships where she earned two best times. She had a strong showing at the Mizuno Atlanta Classic back in May, also earning bronze in the 1000 free at Cary Sectionals in March.

Her best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:53.88
  • 1000 free – 10:05.12
  • 200 IM – 2:05.74
  • 400 IM – 4:23.44

A rising senior at Walton High School, Starnes was the runner-up in both the 200 IM and 500 free at the 2022 Georgia 7A State Championship. She placed ninth and third, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.
