Swim coach Nathan Moore has been accused of having sex with an underage swimmer that he coached. He was arrested by the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office in Arizona on Thursday.

Moore, 43, was booked into the Fourth Avenue Jail in Phoenix and is being held on a $100,000 bond, according to 12 News in Phoenix, Arizona.

An investigation began in March when MCSO detectives were alerted by the parents of the alleged victim that Moore, their daughter’s swim coach, had sex with her.

The circumstances of the case will decide the nature of the specific charge authorities could bring but the key decider is that in United States law a minor cannot give consent. As such, there is no “relationship” and the act of sex can be construed as rape.

The law in the U.S. varies a little from state to state but in general a person engaging in sexual activity with a minor below these proscribed ages (16–18), regardless of that minor’s seeming “consent” or compliance, commits an offense. The terminology of the offence varies according to the nature of the crime.

According to the girl, who has not been identified, she began swimming for Moore when she was 13 in Scottsdale, but he started touching her inappropriately when she was 15. Documents obtained by investigators claim that Moore would drive the alleged victim to and from swim practice and would sexually abuse her in the Anthem Outlets parking lot.

Also in the document, Moore asked the girl to keep his alleged crime a secret and to delete the text messages on her phone so her parents would not find out. The documents also said that the two had sex when she was 16, and she ended the relationship when she was 17 because it felt “weird.”

According to court documents, the girl came forward because Nathan Moore was coaching her younger sisters, and the alleged victim was concerned the same thing would happen again.

The MCSO, according to the Arizona Republic, disclosed that Moore coached at “local gyms, high schools, community centers, and aquatic centers throughout the Valley,” but its report did not identify which ones.

In a phone call monitored by investigators, Moore acknowledged touching her inappropriately and having sex with her while she was underage, documents say.

Andy Ross – Poor writing. This a “sexual relationship”. Please, call it what it is: sexual abuse. Molestation. Child rape. Criminal conduct.
A “relationship” is the lingo of the abuser, the criminal, the rapist, that they use to minimize the impact of their crime. A “relationship” implies consent, which didn’t exist, cannot exist with a 2y/o, a 10y/o, or a 15y/o. They’re all children.
And nowhere in your piece do you reinforce the professional boundary between all coaches and their athletes, regardless of age or consent: “Coaches shall not have romantic or sexual relationships with the athletes a coach.” It is swimming’s ongoing failure to reinforce this bright-line rule that ruins the sport.
