South Carolina Set to Open High School State Championships (Psych Sheets Included)

South Carolina High School swimming is ready to wrap up its short season with state championships this weekend. The Palmetto State will be the first in the country to award 2017-2018 state titles. The 5A meet is on Friday while 3A and 4A action will be on Saturday.

3A Meet

Liam Walker enters the meet as the only man under two minutes in the 200 IM. He’s also top seed by three seconds in the 100 fly. Nathan DePiero has two top spots as well, snagging the middle lane of the 200 and 100 frees. Gamecocks commit Nathan Walton leads the way in the 100 back and is the second seed in the 100 free.

Alondra Janicek will seek a sprint double, entering the meet with the top times in the women’s 50 and 100 free. She’s got several swimmers on her toes in the 50 free, led by Skyler Ayers, who is also second seed in the 100 free. Emma Sullivan is seeded well ahead of the crowd in the 200 and 500 freestyles.

4A Meet

Anna Havens Rice comes into the weekend with two top seeds, a 2:07.27 in the 200 IM that puts her eight seconds ahead of the field, and a 1:07.09 in the 100 breaststroke.

Sarah Mundy has the top spot in the 50 freestyle, but she enters the 100 free second to Hayley Mason. Mason also has the top spot in the 500 free. She and Cara Bognar are nearly 20 seconds ahead of the next fastest entrant.

On the boys side, Casey Mitchell has a demanding lead in the 500 freestyle, seeded at 4:47.80, one of three swimmers under five minutes. Senior Ethan Hirsch (21.92) is the man to beat in the 50 free. Maurilio Saddoud is top seed in the 100 breaststroke and second in the 100 fly. The 100 fly leader Kevin Geist is second seed in the 200 freestyle, where he and Luke Smith are well ahead of the field.

5A Meet

Aubrey Chandler has the top seed in the 50 free, followed by Alaina Smith. Smith has the fastest entry time in the 100 free. The longest event on the high school schedule is led by Rachel Reistroffer. In addition to the 500, Reistroffer is also slated to swim the 200 free where she is in the second spot, one of four women under two minutes. Kirsti McEnroe is the first seed. She’s entered second in the 200 free. Taylor Steele comes into the 100 breaststroke with a 1:04.26, nearly four seconds faster than the next best swimmer. She’s also got the second spot in the 200 IM, behind Hannah Ownbey, the 100 breast second seed.

Ben Fenwick has the fastest time in the men’s 100 and 200 freestyle. In the 200 IM and 500 free Ryan Williams sits atop the entries. Andrew Lockhart is top seed by nearly a second in the 100 breaststroke. Michael Juengel is second in the 200 free, but first seed in the 100 back.
