South African Long Course Nationals: Chad Le Clos, Mark Randall Post Swift Times

DURBAN, South Africa, April 12. THE first night of action is in the books at the South African Long Course Nationals held in Durban.

Chad Le Clos won the men's 200 fly in 1:56.86, tying Michael Rock as the fourth-best in the world this year. Only Nick D'Arcy (1:54.61), Christopher Wright (1:56.23) and Yuta Kimura (1:56.71) have been faster. Sebastien Rousseau finished second in 1:58.09, while Wesley Gilchrist took third in 2:00.69.

Mark Randall cleared 3:50 to claim the men's 400 free crown in 3:49.97. That effort moved him up to seventh in the world this year, joining just six others to have cleared 3:50 this year. Jean Basson placed second in 3:51.01, while Riaan Schoeman took third in 3:51.86. Pal Joensen, of the Faroe Islands, enjoyed a top flight meet as an open competitor with a fourth-place 3:53.39.

Leone Vorster won the women's 200 free title in 1:59.68, while Wendy Trott took second in 2:01.39. Eleni Kosti finished third in 2:01.55. Mandy Loots topped the women's 200 IM in 2:17.75. Jessica Pengelly finished second in 2:18.04, while Bianca Meyer wound up third in 2:18.49.

In semifinal action, Ricky Ellis topped the men's 50 back qualifying round in 26.01. Gerhard Zandberg (26.07) and Charl Van Zyl (26.25) will bracket him in the finale. Loots led the way in the women's 50 fly with a 27.70. Vanessa Mohr (27.95) and Chanelle Van Wyk (28.43) completed the top three seeds in the sprint fly. Taryn Mackenzie qualified first in the women's 50 breast with a 33.22. Jeanie Du Toit (33.34) and Claire Conlon (33.58) earned the next two seeds.

In multi-disability events, Charl Bouwer was listed first in the men's 100 back with a 1:07.34, while Shireen Sapiro was listed first in the women's 100 back with a 1:12.90.
