Scottsdale Aquatic Club Jumps to Early Lead at Mt. Hood Speedo Sectionals

The Mt. Hood edition of the 2018 Speedo Sectionals splashed into action tonight at the Mt. Hood Aquatic Center.  Scottsdale Aquatic Club quickly jumped to the top of the team scores with 495 points. Phoenix Swim Club sits close behind with 469.

Women’s 100 Free

The Dolphins Portland Swimming’s Kaitlyn Dobler led a teen sprint-sation in the first event of the evening in the 100 free. The 16-year-old clocked a 56.48 to earn first and scratch 1.24 seconds off her prelims time of 57.72.

Ashley Strouse (15), representing Scottsdale Aquatic Club, turned in a second place time of 56.67, followed by Bainbridge Island Swim Club’s Eleanor Beers (16) and her time of 57.42.

Men’s 100 Free

Sidney Farber of the University of Denver Hilltoppe flirted with the possibility of a sub 50-second swim in the men’s 100 free finals, stopping the clock at a time of 50.28.

16-year-old Jadan Nabor of YMCA Westside Silver Fins posted a 51.71 to finish second overall, just ahead of RallySport Aquatic Club’s Lukas Miller’s 51.85.

Women’s 200 Breast

It was a quick turn-around from the 100 free for Dobler, but that didn’t stop her from topping the competition in finals of the women’s 200 breast. She finished almost four seconds ahead of the competition with a strong 2:31.32.

14-year-old Mary Codevilla of Flatiron Athletic Club snagged second place with a time of 2:35.1, while Boise YMCA’s Charity Pittard grabbed third overall with a 2:36.31.

Men’s 200 Breast

Phoenix Swim Club swept the podium of the men’s 200 breast, claiming all three medals. Hiromasa Fujimori posted the fastest time of the evening, stopping the clock at  2:14.48 for the gold and 4.15 seconds off his prelims time of 2:18.63.

Teammates Takeharu Fujimori and Zachary Tan posted times of 2:16.15 and 2:19.12 for second and third respectively.

Women’s 200 Back

Emi Moronuki continued the momentum for Phoenix Swim Club, holding off strong competition from 14-year-old Kennedy Noble of the YMCA Westside Silver Fins. Moronuki clocked a 2:14.06 for victory, followed closely by Noble’s 2:14.63. Both swimmers scratched more than five seconds off their preliminary swims.

Corvallis Aquatic Team’s Lindsey Soule completed the top three finishers with a time of 2:18.08.

Men’s 200 Back

Isaac Stump, representing Tucson Ford Aquatics, bested the competition in finals of the men’s 200 back. He posted the fastest time of the night at a 2:02.57.

Foothills Swim Team’s Gavin Olson turned in a 2:05.57 for second place overall, followed closely by YMCA Westside Silver Fins’ Jadan Nabor and his time of 2:05.90.

Women’s 200 Fly

Mara Newman of Lake Oswego Swim Club flew to victory in the 200 fly, scraping 3.17 seconds off her prelims time to win with a 2:17.78.

Flatiron Athletic Club’s Amelie Lessing delivered a 2:18.15 to pick up second overall, while teammate Lucille Matheson turned in a 2:18.34 for third.

Men’s 200 Fly

South Davis Aquatics Team’s Cole Avery claimed the final win of the evening, topping the competition in the men’s 200 fly with a time of 2:02.00.

J Swim Club’s Matt Salig finished second overall with a 2:03.50, while Lucas Hess of Wassatch Front Fish Market rounded out the top three with a 2:04.47 finish.

Women’s 800 Free

Sweet Home Swim Club’s Lucia Davis broke through the nine-minute barrier in timed finals of the women’s 800 free, collecting the gold with a time of 8:59.93.

Scottsdale Aquatic Club’s Hayley Hill grabbed the silver medal with a close time of 9:00.40, while Phoenix Swim Club’s Mia Rankin finished third overall with a 9:07.00

Men’s 800 Free

Ellis Bohon of Scottsdale Aquatic Club scratched a whopping eleven seconds off his entry time of 8:43.40 to win gold with a time of 8:32.40.

Boise YMCA’s Gabriel Machado turned in a time of 8:35.67 for second place overall, followed by Mount Hood Aquatic’s Owen Ngan and his time of 8:36.36.

Correction SAC does have an individual Gold—Ellis Bohon won the Men’s 800 free and the Girls won the 800 free relay.
