Rosolino Wins 200 Free at Italian World Championship Trials

LIVORNO, ITALY, April 10 — Massi Rossolino grew "old and gray" chasing Aussie Ian Thorpe and Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband to their world
records at last fall's Sydney Olympics, but the Italian freestyle star hasn't given up the ghost yet.

Yesterday in the second day of the Italian Nationals/ World Championship Trials here, Rossolino raced to a fast 1:47.63 200 free clocking in his 2001 long course debut.

At Sydney Massi went a national-record 1:46.60 in the semis, then came back the next night to win the bronze in 1:46.65.

His 1:47.6 here ranks him third globally behind Thorpe's record from last week's Aussie Nats/WCTs and Hoogie's 1:47.54 at Glasgow some 10 days ago.

Second in the 200 was Italian distance star Emiliano Brebilla with a pr 1:48.74. Brembilla had never before been under 1:50.7. Third and fourth places were prs from Andrea Beccari (1:48.90) and Matteo Pelliciari
(1:49.45). Beccari's previous pr was 1:49.30 leading off Italy's 800 free relay at the Olympics while Pelliciari's previous 200 best was a 1:50.70 from last year's European Championships in Helsinki.

In the 400 IM, NR record-holder Alessio Boggiatto (4:14.26 from prelims in Sydney) went a 4:15.11 that ranks third globally for '01 behind Americans Erik Vendt (4:14.19) and Tom Wilkens (4:14.53), both of whose times came the last week of March during the U.S. Nationals/WCTs in Austin.

Olympic 100 breast gold medalist Domenico Fioravanti was fastest in the 50 breast (28.55) with a 28.41 in the semis. His pr and NR is 28.16 from two years ago.

In the 200 back it was perennial champ Emanuele Merisi fastest in 2:00.32. His pr is a 1:57.70 from this meet five years ago. In the 50 fly Antonio Lucia touched first (24.82).

Leading off the 400 sprint relay 100 free NR-holder Lorenzo Vismara (49.23 from Sydney) went a quick 49.61 with the 100 free race itself set for later in the week.

On the women's side, sprinter Ceclia Vianini dropped her 50 free pr from 26.52 last year — a time ranking her 142nd globally — to 25.84 and the top spot here. The Italian record is 25.79. Roberta Ioppi won the 200 back (2:15.56); Roberta Crescenti the 50 breast(32.23 with an NR 32.21 in the semis); and Federica Biscia was first in the 400 IM (4:47.93). Her pr and NR are 4:47.56 from the last Olympics.
