Splashback: One year ago today on August 11, 2016, a handful of Olympic rookies brought home gold for their respective countries.

While Simone Manuel (USA) and Penny Oleksiak‘s (CAN) 100 freestyle tie was the talk of the evening, Ryan Murphy‘s efforts in the 200 back for the United States were just as meaningful. And while it was not yet the final, Singapore star Joseph Schooling made a statement in the 100 butterfly semis with a world-leading time. Rie Kaneto of Japan, not quite an Olympic rookie, did win her first Olympic medal by winning the 200 breaststroke in 2:20.30.

Oh… and Michael Phelps won his 22nd Olympic gold medal, too.

Swimming World is recounting all the highlights from the 2016 Rio Olympic Games through a series of Splashbacks. Memories from August 8, 9 and 10 are also available.
