Regan Smith, American Record Holder, Verbally Commits to Stanford for 2020

NEW COMMIT: United States National Team member and multi-time National Age Group record-holder Regan Smith, arguably the most sought-out recruits in the Class of 2020, has declared her verbal commitment to Stanford.

The Lakeville, Minn. native – who also owns a pair of World Junior records – will join the Cardinal as a member of the class of 2024, she announced via Instagram on Sunday.

Smith, who owns 11 Summer Nationals (or faster) standards, does her club swimming with Riptide under head coach Mike Parratto. At the 2018 Phillips 66 National Championships, she set World Junior Records in both the 100m back and 200m back. She then went on to represent Team USA at the Pan-Pac Championships this past summer, finishing third in the 200m back and fourth in the 100m back at just 16 years old.

The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American burst onto the scene in the summer of 2017, finishing second in the 200m back and fifth in the 100m back at Nationals to earn her National Team berth. That summer, she finished eighth in the 200m back at the the World Championships before earning three gold medals at World Juniors in both backstroke events as well as the 4x100m medley relay.

Most recently, Smith continued to make a name for herself by crushing Mary T. Meagher’s elusive 15-16 National Age Group record in the 200 fly at Juniors West in December. She also lowered her own 100 back 15-16 NAG mark as the leadoff on the 4×100 medley relay. Over the past three years, Smith has earned 13 top-2 finishes at the Junior National level.

Smith, who is currently in her junior year at Lakeville North High School, is also the 15-16 NAG record-holder in the 100 fly and 200 back, the 13-14 NAG record-holder in the 100m back, 100 back, 100 fly, and the 11-12 NAG record-holder in the 50 back and 100 back.
