Ordenes Breaks “Straits of Magellan” Record

Pedro Ordenes, a Masters swimmer and triathlete, swam the Straits of Magellan on December 30, 1999. He set a new world record of 1 hour and 58 minutes, and braved 39.7 degree water and high winds. He was escorted by the Chilean Navy on his route from the island, Tiera del Fuego, to the Southern tip of mainland Chile. Small dolphins, called Tuninas in Chile, swam alongside.

He was greeted by CNN and all the major Chilean media. Pedro can be reached at pedrordenes@earthlink.net
