NEW COMMIT: Three time North Carolina 4A High School state champion Kenna Haney has verbally committed to swim for the University of Tennessee beginning in 2019. Haney is from Raleigh, North Carolina, where she is a junior at Sanderson High School and swims for New Wave Swim Team under Coach Ed Lower.

In 2016 as a freshman Haney finished 15th (59.49) in the 100 back at the NCHSAA 4A Championships. As a sophomore Haney returned to the state meet qualified in two individual events. She won the 200 freestyle (1:47.29) by over a second before finishing runner up (4:50.49) in the 500 freestyle. This February Haney defended her title in the 200 freestyle (1:47.90), still winning by a second. She picked up another victory for the Spartans with her 4:49.59 500 freestyle.

Haney is primarily a freestyler, with strong times from the 100 through the 1650. A testament to her skill across distances, Haney’s top USA Swimming power points come in the 200 (909 points) and 1650 (908 points) freestyles. Her backstroke has also come along, recently. Her top SCY times include:

  • 1650 Free 16:27.71
  • 1000 Free 9:55.54
  • 500 Free 4:49.20
  • 200 Free 1:47.29
  • 100 Free 50.67
  • 50 Free 23.87
  • 200 Back 1:59.42
  • 100 Back 57.16

At this year’s SEC Championships the Lady Vols were third in the 800 freestyle relay, with splits ranging from 1:43.54 to 1:46.58. Haney is still a bit out of that range, but would have finished 13th in the 1650 and been in the middle of the 200 free C final last year. It took a 4:49 to make it back in the 500 freestyle.

Haney told Swimming World,

“I chose Tennessee because of the amazing team atmosphere and coaching staff! As soon as I stepped foot on campus I knew it was the place for me! I can’t wait to be a Lady Vol!”
