World Championships: This Time Around, Michael Andrew Successfully Negotiates Double; Chase For 50 Free Crown Is On

Earlier in the week, Michael Andrew was unable to successfully navigate a double in the 50-meter butterfly and 100 breaststroke. While he reached the final of the shorter event, Andrew was ninth and on the outside of the breaststroke race. On Thursday, though, the American multi-event star had no trouble negotiating his latest two-event challenge at the World Championships in Budapest.

Contesting the semifinals of the 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle, Andrew advanced to the finals in both events at Duna Arena. The 23-year-old first snuck into the championship race of the 100 fly in eighth place, his effort of 51.28 narrowly getting the job done. About 35 minutes later, Andrew finished tied for fifth in the 50 free, thanks to his performance of 21.80.

Andrew has been long known for adopting packed schedules, but short turnarounds have occasionally proved too difficult to handle. On the sixth day of the World Champs, Andrew found a way to manage the task. The schedule for both finals will be more conducive for Andrew, whose best chance at a medal of the two events is the 50 freestyle.

The Friday night schedule features the 50 freestyle before the 100 butterfly, a setup which will allow for Andrew to race the event in fresh form. Among others, the American will chase Great Britain’s Ben Proud, who locked up the top seed in the final with a semifinal outing of 21.42.
